ST: Jays @ Royals - July 10-12

Post#1 » by Santoki » Fri Jul 10, 2015 7:58 pm

I don't think I've ever created a winning series thread, so I might as well take on one we're practically guaranteed to lose.

Game 1: July 10th
Marco Estrada vs Danny Duffy (LHP)
8:10pm EST

Game 2: July 11th
Mark Buehrle vs Chris Young (RHP)
2:10pm EST

Game 3: July 12th
Felix Doubront vs Edison Volquez
2:10pm EST

What's with Dioner getting the start again?

Why not DH Smoak (who can switch hit) and play Martin at C.

This is a big series!

They don't seem to play Smoak against lefties. I haven't checked the stats between Navarro and Smoak batting righty.

Gibbons does what Gibbons wants.

Smoak only has 13 plate appearances with 4 hits, 1 walk and 2 home runs against lefties. He's a career .650 OPS against lefties however.

Meanwhile Navarro is hitting .188 with a .465 OPS against lefties this year. He does have a career .762 OPS.

I find Gibbons to be a horrible manager. He bases his splits decisions based on data that is a good 5 years old most of the time when making situations decisions.

Bautista and EE aren't their normal dominant selves this year. EE has a sub-800 OPS, and Bautista has arguably put up one of the quietest .871 OPS seasons in history. He's not blistering the ball like he used to. It looks to me like he's lost some batspeed. Still an incredible player, mind you, just not quite as elite as in past years.

I would be hesitant to sign either Bautista or EE to $20M+ AAV extensions at this point, as that's probably what they're going to command in free agency. All the more reason to trade them now if - and only if - they continue muddling along at .500.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

we're not even a full inning into the series and the bandwagon royals fans are already annoying

Bautista outplays his contract by more than $70 million over the next four seasons (2013-2016).

Looks like a problem with your expectations, not Bautista.

If a normal Bautista gets on base .380 of the time I'll keep him until he turns hot. If we can't afford to extend both of them though, move Bautista to 1b eventually and then Edwin can sign for less as a DH or sign elsewhere.

Extending them is a different discussion that is predicated on what this team is trying to do in 2016 (with what could very well be new management), but Bautista is doing more than fine this year. Almost right on his projections (144 wRC+/145 wRC+) as well.
