Awesome News. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

Anything we get from him to close this season is pure gravy from where we were a few months ago.

Postseason eligibility question:

Has Stroman remained on the DL all season as part of the 40-man roster? If so, I believe that makes him eligible for the post-season roster according to the rule:

"To be eligible for a team's postseason roster, a player must be on any of the following: (a) the active 25-man roster (b) the disabled list, (c) the bereavement list, or (d) the suspended list as of August 31 at midnight ET"

If anyone can clarify that would be great. I still doubt he will be ready to contribute in a meaningful way this season if he's only starting his rehab assignment on the 21st, but it's within the realm of possibility that it's mid-September and they give him a spot start (let's say for Hutch) to see if he's ready. Either that or he could replace someone like Hendriks or Schultz in the pen (though that would be a less desirable option).

Another eligibility Q: if a team has no injuries as of Aug 1, so only 25 players qualify under the above rule, if a guy subsequently gets injured is the team down to 24 guys? There would be no qualified guy to replace him.

I think you mean September 1st and I think the commissioner can make an exemption in certain circumstances if the injured player isn't back before the postseason begins.

MLB rosters expand to 40 on September 1st. Would be very surprised to see him before that and we wouldn't need to send anyone down when calling him up from rehab games.

Why would he join the Jays as a reliever? Would take too long to get his rehab starts in, and stretch him out as a starter to return this year?

That's what it is, man. Minor league baseball ends on Sept 7, perhaps longer in Lansing because of playoffs. He can't be stretched out enough by Sept 7.

Wildcard starter after we throw Price on 3 days rest twice in the final week.

3 days rest? He told Tim and Sid he takes pride in his regimen and was good to go today. I would just start him every other day. Have him close on the "off" days.

Lets not get too far ahead of ourselves. Wasn't Saunders supposed to be back sometime in April?

Basically. Even if we had him stretching out in the Dunedin facility after the minor league season ended, starting pitchers usually stretch out over the course of a good five weeks in spring training; it'd be doable on a slightly truncated schedule, to have him ready to start for the final week or two of Sept, but he still would not have faced real competition for twelve months.

I still want an August waiver claims (Shields? Shark? and K-Rod) instead of Hutch on the 40 even with Stro in the bullpen.

If no waiver claim is made, he's still likely to be better than Hutch. Shields is the pipe dream, but it's likely just that.

Stroman's too important to throw out there for 100+ IP on a short buildup, even in a stretch run, and bad though Hutch has been, having Stroman effectively build up in the majors would be pretty taxing on the 'pen.

can he be put into setup role and move sanchez back into rotation where he should be?

Please dont rush him back. I know they're saying they're not, but I have no trust for the Jays.

Sanchez isn't going back into the rotation this season. He's been lights out as a reliever and will remain there for at least the rest of the season. You also can't transition someone from reliever to starter overnight.

Pitching isn't like any other position in any other sport. Even if you're healed physically, you can't just jump into the action. If Stroman miraculously makes it back this season he will have to be rushed back and won't have the proper amount of time to prepare for major league hitting (who have been doing their thing for the entire season). I know it seems like an easy decision to throw Stroman back into the fire once he's healed but the bullpen and the rotation have actually been really good for about three weeks now outside of Drew Hutchison.
