If Price walks, does our window of opportunity at winning a WS slam shut?

There will be other pitchers in the free agent pool that the Jays can pick up.

No.... I think considering the Offense, the Jays could be very sucessful with the failed strategy Boston tried this season. Which is to get a rotation full of solid #2-3 type of arms. With one solid top guy. Doesn't have to an Ace like Price. Boston just got the wrong guys on a team that was not quite ready to carry them. If JAYS get a couple of guys that pitch like Estrada or Burhle, that would do it.

anyone agree?

...... on a side not, its reported the JAYS wanted Hamels. Tries for several weeks to trade for him. Had the pieces. Hamels would not come to Toronto.

Baseball is not like Basketball where one player is the difference between being a contender or not.

Slam shut? No. But it does wound our chances. He could leave and we could get another ace. Or even a strong no1 starter to go with stromans return. We have a couple old bats, but we have a couple guys with lots of good years left in them.

Imagine if we had someone like Noah Syndergaard in our farm system who could replace a departing Price.

Stroman will be coming back... Price and Stroman would be an amazing 1 - 2 combination... However if Price doesn't return we still have a league best offence.

If Price leaves, we'd have a lot of money to throw around on guys like Shark or Cueto. Osuna might move back to starting. Stroman will be back. Fingers crossed that Hutch can get his groove back.

We'll have options. With best-in league offence and now strong defense, our pitching merely has to be average for us to contend.

Imagine we traded Kyle Drabek and Travis Snider for Zack Greinke.

Obviously not, but here's the nightmare scenario. The NDP wins (actually, I want them to) and speculators drive the dollar down to 65 cents over the winter. What the heck can Rogers do?

It's often overlooked, but the 92-93 Jays were the biggest spenders in the sport at the time. Having 4 million paying customers per year can do that. But this just happened to coincide with the dollar being at a high water mark, up to 91 or so cents at one point.

They can buy currency hedges such as fx options and forwards to lock in rates.

It costs money to do so but it provides some certainty on fx rates and mitigates against your nightmare scenario.

If Price leaves, its likely that Buehrle is retiring/heading south AND Dickey is being bought out- which would give up a ton of money to spend on pitching

It'll be interesting what happens with Buehrle and Dickey if Price accepts a long term deal here- I feel like he'll ask for the vets to come back before he signs anything

Why would Dickey get bought out?

The time to do that is largely past. They would have locked in part of their US dollar commitments for this season, but as for next season, you have to think that they are buying projection against a 65-cent dollar with 75-cent dollars instead of 92-cent dollars like a year ago. I.e., the amount of exposure limited by hedging is much smaller. A great deal of exposure is locked in now.

Fx forwards and options typically go out to two years but usually no further. So, if they were savvy they would be covered for next year as well.

I work in this area so its not BS on my end :)

You never really know when it slams shut. The 1993 team was a significant makeover from the 1992 team and they still got another chip.

When the Rangers choked away 2011 to the Cards, a lot Texas fans naively assumed they'd be back (I remember warning Texas fans that the window may have shut after blowing 2 straight WS appearances and the difficulty of even getting to the WS)

However, not having a true ace is a serious damper on fielding a good baseball core.

all depends on our winter moves, we're only missing a great starter, a good starter, and a closer and we contend
