A Thread to talk about the other non Jays related series around Major League Baseball.

The wild card games start things off on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Both the wild card games are going to be fun. I wouldn't be surprised if the Astros stun the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. They have a lot of power hitters and have Keuchel going. Then again, those Astros power hitters might end up chasing Tanaka's splitters like we always do lol.

With the Cubs and Pirates, we'll have two of the top five teams in MLB going at it. With Arrieta and Cole going against each other, whichever team that scores two runs first probably wins.

I just hope the Yankees and Cardinals lose quickly so the final four will be a bunch of teams that haven't won a World Series in at least 20 years (or ever).

Man it would be sweet to see the Yanks lose the WC. I think the Astros would put up a better fight versus KC as well.

CC Sabathia checked into rehab for alcoholism this morning. He won't be on the postseason roster.

So beyond Tanaka, the Yanks are gonna be running out who, Ivan Nova and Severino? That's if they even get out of the WC game. Beyond that they have Adam Warren. Rotation not looking good.

CC wouldn't have made the roster even if he didn't enter rehab, he is probably their 5th/6th best starter. They also have Pineda who was pitching pretty well before his injury.

Tanaka, Pineda and Severino is still a pretty solid top 3, Sabathia wasn't going to be starting anyway.

He was probably the #4 starter. Not that it's a huge step down (if it's one at all) to Nova, but he likely would have been pitching in the ALDS. Had a 2.17 ERA over his last 5 starts. Not that I believe that means anything, but baseball decisions are often made with a lot less meaningful information than that.

Cubs/Pirates for the Wild Card is utterly brutal; they're the second- and third-best team by record in baseball. As good as the AL East has been in some years, it never had anything approaching three teams with 97 wins or more.

Guess one should be glad that they all make it, at least; heh, winning 97 and missing the playoffs would be a rare callback to the pre-divisional series era, when (among other injustices) the Giants won 103 games in 1993, six games clear of the third-best regular season team in baseball, and missed the postseason.

Ah, **** em all. We had a few top 5 teams by 3rd order wins and other measures in the 00s and we weren't even close to the playoffs.

They definitely aren't the second and third best teams overall, by most metrics. But I wish they could switch the Wild Card round to at least a best of three, or re-seed by record after the WC round, because having them fight it out for a single game only to face the Cards in the DS is a bit goofy.

I know the cool thing to do these days is to underrate the Cards, but I'd still rather play them than Greinke/Kershaw or the Mets' aces.

I knew Arrieta was on fire, but I didn't realize until yesterday that over his last 12 games his ERA was 0.41. Amazing. I wonder when the last time somebody has an ERA that low over a 12 start stretch?

I would personally like to see the 3 Division winners and 2 Wild Card teams be seeded, by record, 1-5, with 4 and 5 playing the 1 game.

Puts less emphasis on the the Division, but they still make the playoffs regardless of their record.

So, the Current NLDS of NYM/LAD would acutally be the "Wildcard game"

and CHC/PIT would be a best of 5.

To make that fair you'd have to rebalance the schedule. I doubt that's something MLB or owners want. It's likely just a one year anomaly. Let's see how this system works for a few years before changing it up again.

Astros. Is there any sane Jays fan that would cheer for the Yankees?
