Pretty good interview for a Toronto radio station no fluff questions and Halladay was very candid

Cliffs:

- A loud crowd can have some impact on a visiting pitcher.
- One time a squirrel running across the field caused a play re-do, resulting in a home run. Freak plays happen.
- 3 straight errors a much bigger deal than the Martin error. Unheard of at the MLB level. Rips the heart out of a pitcher.
- Bautista bat flip was a little over the top. He didn't like it, but wording carefully as a Jays alum.
- Would not retaliate due to showboating, only to protect a teammate, though some pitchers may.
- When benches clear, you go after the guy you like the least.
- Camaraderie can be the difference in world series winners and he notices that with the Jays.
- He would have had a big issue doing what Price did, bullpen in game 4 and being skipped in game 5.
- Really likes the Jays chances. Need offense in the playoffs, which we have. He's rooting for us.

Issue in that it would sour his relationship with the manager? If so, I'm less than impressed.

I think the Price in the bullpen for game 4 was being blown out of proportion.

Price wanted to be in there and help the team win. He knew it would be hard for him to pitch game 5 with that happening.

I expect a big series from Price against KC and with that, I hope we can put this Gibby vs Price rift to bed.

I always find this funny. You don't protect somebody after something bad happens to them. That's revenge. Call it what it is. All it does is prove to the other team how mad it made you, and it makes it more likely to happen again in the future, either as counter-revenge (bean ball war) or whenever they want to get a rise out of your again - which is kinda more like the opposite of protecting your teammates.

Halladay wasn't a playoff choker so he never had to deal with that situation.

Price is very aware of his past playoff performances and I'm sure he was on board with Stroman starting in game 5 (he seems like a guy who puts winning ahead of ego).

The only person who should be upset about the end result of the game for the Rangers is Cole Hamels and Roy did a good job addressing it.

Hamels was the biggest reason why Texas even had a chance and his shortstop blew it 3 times. He should have gone off on him after the game.

Hah, yes. If Price pitched a no-hitter in Game 1, then he probably would have started Game 5.

Anyway, Roy (#FreeUtley) Halladay is a right hander, so probably wouldn't be ever put in the same situation. He also made it clear that if the manager had sat him down and gave a good explanation as to why, then he would accept the situation, and, uh, I guess put on his cleats for Game 4.

Jays had zero available left handers in an elimination game. Stroman, Sanchez and Osuna were good for Game 5. The ONLY issue I have was bringing Price back for the 8th innning.

Halladay is a guy with a lot of pride. It's easy to see that with his perspective on things. Also may be a reason why we heard some unconfirmed news stories that he sometimes clashed with Cito and Gibbons previously.

That said, he was so reliable that he would rarely run into problems where the manager didn't trust him.

Hopefully Price does well in his chance vs KC.

I have zero issue using Price in game 4 out of the bullpen.

My issues are:
1. Putting him in the 5th when you have a 6 run lead
2. Burning him with 50 pitches so that he is unavailable for Game 5

It was like they decided before the game that he was going to pitch half a game and paid no attention to the actual circumstance. A good manager thinks about the future (Game 5) where he could have potentially been much more valuable.

What if there was an actual late inning high leverage situation where you needed a lefty in Game 5?

I really miss Doc.

I was so sad when we traded him, but realized it was for the better. I hate the Phillies, but I wish he was able to win a WS.

He was my badge of honor during the rough days.

halladays interview reminded me of ra dickey. not nearly as well spoken or poetic but very candid without sounding like a huge douche. although him saying he wouldnt pitch out of the bullpen was a littttttttle hypocritical if you ask me. youre gonna support unwritten "respect-for-the-game" rules like no bat flips but if a manager asks you to pitch out the pen to help the team win at all costs, it would take you some coaxing? youre telling one guy that he needs to check his ego at the door while essentially saying it would be hard for you to do the same? im not trying to indict halladay necessarily, im more trying to bring up the fact that the root of these unwritten rules is actually a lot of horse ****.

Interesting. Though if Halladay had lost 6 straight playoff appearances his answer might be a little different.

At his prime Halladay was twice the pitcher Price is. Halladay is a historic ace with absolutely unshakeable nerves and supreme consistency. You build your rotation to maximize his starts, period. If Doc had been in the rotation Gibbons would have saved him for Game 5 without a doubt.

Halladay post season era: 2.37
Price post season era: 5.04

Series would have been over by Game 4 if we had Roy anyway.

Halladay pitched out of the bullpen when asked for the Jays/Gibbons actually. Did it in May 2008 and did it very well in a close win.

Obviously he wouldn't like losing a start in the playoffs, but it would never happen to him because he's Roy **** Halladay. Hell, he'd have come out of the pen to save them from elimination and still have started game 5.

still pisses me off we wasted Doc's prime here. Not even one meaningful game pitched in september.

i remember this stat because it was so bloody remarkable even if part or most of it was with the Phillies: at one point Doc had 60+ consecutive away starts in which he pitched into the 7th inning or later and gave up 3 or less runs. the only other guy who had done it was Grover Cleveland in like 1912. A truly insane stat when you think about it. That represents like 3-4 entire seasons of starts without even once getting hit hard in the other team's park.
