Who are the available GMs to consider?

Post#1 » by North_of_Border » Thu Oct 29, 2015 6:29 pm

Who are the qualified GM candidates currently available because i expect Shapiro to be quick with this. He probably already had thecandidate on his mind before AA walked away because this is a crucial time. As soon as the World Series are over we need someone making tough decisions.... Unless Shapiro takes over as GM on temp basis.

AA is going to Boston though. I'll put money on that. The Dombrowski connection along with their prospects and money make it too obvious.

Doubt that happens but if it does, than Hazen comes here since he has ties with Cleveland

I wouldn't be surprised if Shapiro is the interim GM

To what position? They already hired their VP/GM. AA is much more likely to sit out for a year and exercise his options next season to get full control with some desperate franchise.

Why would Shapiro promote LaCava when he can just as easily go and get Cleveland's version of LaCava whom he'd already have experience with? The name brought up is Ross Atkins: VP of Player Personnel. He just interviewed for the Angels GM job a month ago.

Maybe becaue Shapiro thinks LaCava is a better option? (Assuming he will be interviewing him and others for the GM and not take over himself)

LaCava would be great. I'd feel better about there being some sort of sense of continuity remaining. I do believe it as a pipe dream though. One has to think if Shapiro is going to reach for a first time GM, he has a shortlist of guys he'd have before him.

Shapiro and Francona sharing the duties in the middle.

Apparently, AA got a lot of his team under contract for 2016, so unless Rogers is ready to eat a lot of severance, an internal promotion might be a plausible scenario.

Presumably it's better to have a GM familiar with the rest of the front office and scouts, rather than a GM only familiar with the team president.

A better question might be "does it really matter?" You have to think AA left because he wasn't getting enough power in the proposed structure, so Shapiro isn't here just to be the business guy as first assumed. Couple that with the trend of baseball ops chain of command shifting upward, where presidents become de facto GM who hire an AGM type to split duties, and it appears a similar picture is forming here. Seattle even had an FO guy Scott Servais go down to become their new manager. Perhaps unrelated, Boston hired Ruben Amaro as their 1B coach. Shapiro is a baseball guy to the bone and I think he's the new GM for all intents and purposes.

It's not like he doesn't know LaCava. LaCava was with Cleveland in 2002 and I remember reading that he was involved in the Colon trade to get Lee, Sizemore and Phillips because of his knowledge of the Montreal system. That was the most significant move in Shapiro's career.

If that was the case though shouldn't we look to the relationship he had with Antonetti for 5 years before drawing the conclusion he accepted the job to be the GM here?
