But then I'd have to work for Rogers? Pass.

I do find the baseball-wide love of part-time/unpaid interns who need to be software developers and programmers and scouts a bit silly. It's okay to make your highly-demanding entry level positions full time, people.

It's a paid internship though. I'm going to apply once I have some data science courses under my belt. I'd love to join

There's a huge supply of people willing to do those jobs for free. That's why they're unpaid, or low paid. Anthopoulos started with the Expos as an unpaid intern. It gets people that are the most passionate about the game into those roles, and occasionally they can move up the ladder. If there were no qualified people willing to work for little to no pay, those jobs would offer a lot more money.

I don't doubt that it makes complete financial sense for the teams, because the supply is there. I just loathe the internization (I made a word!) of so many fields; it freezes out a lot of people who can't be bankrolled by their parents or take on further post-university debt.

Yeah, it has that effect too. But jobs requiring post-secondary education also have that effect, and this is not much different. It's basically another type of education that only people from fairly well-off families can afford.

That's pretty much it, only instead of giving the money to often wildly inefficient universities through tuition costs, they hand it over to billion-dollar companies in the form of free labour instead. Personally, I'd like to see a lot of the unpaid internships challenged in court, because I suspect they wouldn't hold up even with people agreeing to do them. It will never happen, though, because governments won't take on the biggest business players that way and it isn't like people who don't have the means to work for free have the means to fight multi-million dollar protracted legal battles for a job that they would create a lot of bad blood over in fighting for it anyway.

Government student loans and tuition subsidization are, in theory at least, the great equalizer between rich and poor on the university front. No such system exists for internships and the other foot-in-the-door parallels, and the mere thought of such gives me the willies.
