Devon Travis Out 4-5 More Months

http://mlb.nbcsports.com/2015/11/18/devon-travis-out-4-5-months-following-shoulder-surgery/

He underwent what was described as a “cleanup” procedure in September, but today the Blue Jays announced that he’s gone under the knife for a more extensive surgery and faces a 4-5 month recovery timetable. In other words, odds are he’ll begin 2016 where he ended 2015: On the disabled list.

Counting rehab assignments we'll probably see him around June if everything goes well

It probably means more Goins unfortunately, but at least all that tiresome Tulo trade talk can be put to rest for a while.

Full story here

http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-travis-sidelined-4-5-months-after-left-shoulder-surgery/

The Blue Jays say they discovered that Travis had a pre-existing acromion bone non-union in his left shoulder earlier this season. The condition, known as an Os Acromiale, didn’t appear to be contributing to his left shoulder inflammation at the time, but after weighing other possibilities, doctors recommended a procedure that included inserting screws to stabilize the extra bone in his shoulder. Dr. David Altchek operated on Travis in New York City on Tuesday.

What I don't get is why wasn't something done about this issue earlier in the season? If Travis had this surgery done in September or October, he gets ample time to rehab and get the full spring training to get his body in game shape. As it is now, he'll probably be out throughout spring training and will probably need at least another month of the regular season just to get acclimated to the game again. Yeah, we have a backup option in Goins, but Travis brings much more to the table.

Its a good thing the Jays shut him down before the playoffs started or this whole thing woulda been blamed on management for rushing him back..... Though it woulda happened anyway.

Jays should be patient with this guy. He is gonna be special.

It kind of sucks that the doctors misdiagnosed the issue. They could of dealt with this issue much earlier in the season and he would of been well rested for next year's regular season. Now he's going to go into the season with a bunch of rust and need to find his grove with the season already in full swing.

Also trading any of our infielders. Need all three. I'd like to see the Jays bring up someone maybe a bit more capable than Kawasaki to start the year on the bench though.

This is the same medical staff that let Lind play on a broken foot, right? Same medical staff that handled Saunders' injury? Same medical staff that let Bautista start in RF when he couldn't throw a ball without major risk of hurting himself?

Yeah, methinks one of the wisest investments we can make right now might be in a more competent medical staff...

Very unfortunate. Our medical staff consists of incompetent monkeys it seems. Why wasn't this discovered and taken care off during the 2015 season when Travis was just sitting his ass on the bench playing cheerleader all season. Now we have to sit through another couple months of Goins the offensive black hole in 2016. Ugh.

Devon Travis Out 4-5 More Months

I think you guys should probably read the other article on this. On mobile and don't have the link but the one where it says he's out 16-20 weeks from The Score. It goes into much more detail about the surgery.

But, if anyone remembers, they couldn't figure out the cause and did exploratory surgery and found nothing.

The Jays medical staff doesn't handle those kinds of things. They go to the best doctors and specialists for these kinds of things. Unfortunately it took time to figure out this issue. But, if you read closely they're saying the surgery done wasn't to address the issue that even caused the inflammation in the first place. So who knows if this will pop up again in the future. Seems to be a complicated issue for Travis.

This pretty much means the end of Devon Travis being more than we had hoped. Shoulder issues are always tricky

They've had essentially 5-6 months since he initially went down. Someone botched this very badly. He's in a better spot if this surgery is had months ago in regards to returning to baseball activities closer to spring training. If the 5 month window away from baseball activities is accurate, he won't be back with the Jays any sooner than May as a best case scenario, potentially June. He's going to have a significant amount of rehab a minor league stints.

This was either very poorly handled in terms of the rehab plan after the injury first occurred or it has been very unlucky at each step of recovery.

Now we know why Detroit gave up on him. Their medical staff must have known something. Only way that trade makes sense.

Return to Toronto Blue Jays
