The Red Sox are taking no shortcuts with their rotation this time. According to a source briefed on the negotiations, they agreed on Tuesday on a seven-year, $217 million contract with lefthander David Price.

Price, 30, was one of the two best starters on the free-agent market along with Zack Greinke.

The Sox built a rotation of middling starters last season, a flawed strategy that led to finishing in last place. Dave Dombrowski, an executive with a long history of making splashy deals, was hired as president of baseball operations to make significant changes and was aggressive in doing so.

Wish him all the best in Boston. However, 31 M for 7 years is a great deal for Price. I wanted this guy back, but given this team's budget at 140 M, matching that offer would have been a ridiculous thing to do. Thanks for the two months of fun!

Price seems like a great guy, so I hope he has success. Hope the Sox continue to suck dick.

Don't let the door hit the back of your head on the way out.

Boston: you kept true to your word. you overspent like drunken idiots. Mr Price will almost be 31 when his contract starts.

It's a good thing we've already solidified our starting rotation smh... It boggles my mind that Rogers is going the cheap route and is willing to risk throwing away all the support the Jays received last season. Obviously it's still early and I'm not saying that Price is the best fit/piece available, and things can still take shape, but if they refuse to step up and fully commit, then I hope it hurts their bottom line versus last season, so that they realize they have to spend like their divisional counterparts, if they want to remain competitive and not waste one of the best offensive lineups in the league.

I'm okay with them not throwing crazy money and term for an elite SP, but I hope they don't assume that the current starting rotation is sufficient enough. Also, I hope they intend to strengthen the bullpen, otherwise this could be a wasted season.

The hilarity that will ensue if Price does a Verlander in his first year in Boston which is a distinct possibility. He's gonna hit the wall sooner or later. Even getting 3 top notch years may be a stretch, this guy has alot of mileage. Just glad we didn't make that mistake. And this does not make Boston an instant contender. they still have work to do.

And what is the opt out? Team or player? I'm assuming player but that really means little as Price will not give up that contract at 33.

It'll be player; no source, but there's zero chance that Price would agree to what would then be a three-year deal with four options.

And I'm okay with this.

They topped Kershaw's deal. There's really nothing else that has to be said about it. It's gonna be absolutely gross to see him pitch in their jersey, but even the most spendy of spendy Jays teams couldn't touch this deal and if they're gonna get him, I'm glad it's gonna cost them.

it's sad to see Price go to a division rival. when price comes to town, standing O for Price for a great half season, or boos for crappy post-season?

Largest deal for a pitcher ever. I know some will cry about it but it's ridiculous. At least Kershaw was 26 when he signed that and coming off three Cy Youngs in 4 years.

It's too much money. It's a bad investment. Years 4-7 are questionable at minimum and you are really verging into a best case scenario of being a dollar neutral pitcher for the most part. That being said having front of the rotation arms are important. Shapiro and Rogers don't think that's necessary next year and the Jays are going to pay for it in the standings and it's going to nuke fan interest when this is a 3rd place team

It was going to be absurd money whether he was paid 27/year or 31 so it's all mostly irrelevant. The Jays are forever a large market team that is going to operate like a mid-market.
