Greinke, Samardzija, Lackey sign... Cueto next

Post#1 » by North_of_Border » Sat Dec 5, 2015 7:53 pm

Greinke + Arizona = 206 million, 6 years
Samardzija + SF = 90 million, 5 years
Lackey + Cubs = 32-34 million, 2 years

--------------------

Grenkie gets more per season money than David Price. Plus costs Arizona a 1st rounder. I think Shapiro was joking when he said Jays would make an offer to this guy. Way out the Jays league.

Samardzija SHOCKINGLY got a huge deal. Horrible last season. Plus costs SF a 1st rounder.

Lackey is old but got a reasonable deal based on last season. Shocking part is someone gave up a 1st rounder for him.

................ Cueto is the #1 man on the market now.

I don't think were going to sign Cueto, and now i'm starting to think that were not signing any big free agent pitchers. I think the goal of this management goal is to say all the right things to the media, and hope the season tanks so they can rebuild.

Our rotation is basically set. Our budget is basically spent. We aren't signing any of them and never were.

With all these TV deals pretty soon $140M is going to rank more towards bottom of the pack in payroll.

Not for a long time, no.

However, that's immaterial here, because the $140m payroll was known, as is the fact that we have five starters in the fold. We didn't trade for Chavez and sign Happ to set us up to chase a $20m a year pitcher...even in the press conference, Shapiro/Atkins were talking about pitching depth. Greinke isn't depth. Cueto isn't depth. Depth is a sixth starter on an incentive-laden minor league deal.

Yeah, I understand what's going with our team... Just thought i would mention that while $140M is obviously healthy and enough to win with, but when you look at other payrolls in the league, it's not crazy impressive when you consider our market ($140M likely wont be top 10 in payroll this upcoming season).

I don't think it will be very long with TV deals and growth of the game that we see many teams spend right around where the Jays are at the very least.

Just last year 19 teams spent $110M+ and that's without counting the upcoming tv deals from teams like BAL, CHC, ARI, etc

I think the only biggish play that we've yet to make is Revere. At 2/war season, he's more than worth the $7mil/per arbitration award...but perhaps not to us. So can we parlay Revere and his $7 mil per into relief help? Are there teams in need of a LF/CF, who can afford his salary and have bullpen arms to spare?

I'd go a step further and say I don't want the Jays to sign Cueto. They aren't going to offer him a contract but that would just be bad money. He's going to be expensive and a 20+ million dollar Cueto is not good value.

Samardzija deal makes Estrada and Happ signings look like a crazy steal.

I have never understood the hype around Samardzija. He seems like one of those guys who keeps getting paid on potential that never develops.
His only winning record year was when he was full time in the pen. He's not even average (i.e. .500ish) for his career, in fact well below. To top it off he gives up runs at a ridiculous rate. I suppose one could argue he eats some innings at 6-2/3 per start but that's not saying much when your ERA is 5.
Who knows, maybe he'll be better going back to the NL? I wouldn't hold my breath though and I'm glad the Jays stayed away from him.

P.S. Now matter how bad this deal turns out, it will never make the Happ signing look good. LOL $12 mil a year for a guy who is at best an end of rotation guy and whose only reasonable success was one loop around the NL before teams could adjust is just crazy. I doubt many other teams were clamoring for a shot at signing Happ, much less at that number.

The Royals had also tried to trade Greinke to Toronto, but the Blue Jays would not include both Kyle Drabek and Travis Snider.

I don't get why we didn't go after Zimmermann. He seemed like pretty good value, and low risk relative to some of the other guys.

Because the price of Zimmerman was that of 2 starting Pitchers, Estrada and Happ. And we had numerous holes to fill in the rotation. Zimmerman signed for $22 million per season.

I've read a couple of articles saying that he was the most overrated SP on the market and whoever signs him will almost certainly regret it. He was pretty mediocre last season.

And pretty fantastic over the past few years.

Would you rather have Happ or Zimmermann?

Obviously Zimmerman. But that's irrelevant because Zimmerman signed for $110 million, Happ for $36 million.

This deal was discussed on this board at the time, and few if any would have pulled the trigger. Those were the Jays top two prospects, ffs. And IIRC, Greinke would have been a rental. Maybe he had another year on his contract. He certainly wasn't long-term controllable a la Donaldson.

It would have been like trading your top two prospects for an aging knuckleballer whose recent success depended on the arm strength to make it a higher velocity pitch.
