Shapiro responds to Yovani Gallardo question on PTS

Post#1 » by Traps92 » Wed Jan 13, 2016 11:03 pm

Mark Shapiro was live on Prime Time Sports and mentioned about having Gallardo on the team. Do you guys think the Jays should nab him?

IMO, it would pretty much bolster our starting pitching and also considering the fact he played pretty well against us during the 2015 ALDS. However, it would cost us a draft pick..

I don't see how this is in the budget.

Who brought up Gallardo's name? Was Shapiro just answering a question?

No, not with our current budget, because unless that changes we would have to unload a >= salary to get Gallardo. Maybe if Travis was healthy you could gamble a bit and trade Tulo, but he isn't and we don't know what we'll get from him in 2016. It doesn't make sense to completely reinvent a team that came within a hair of the WS.

Here are Gallardo's K/9 rates over the past four years:

2012: 9.0.
2013: 7.2.
2014: 6.8.
2015: 5.9.

No thanks.

He then followed that sentence up by all but saying they wouldn't get him. Not exactly worth much thought.

That's true. We still have to lock up Bautista and Encarnacion too. Only thing that I see needs improvement would be our pitching right now and considering that we have a stacked team full of batters, one just might be traded to address the need and at the same time stay within budget.

Only way he comes is if Dickey goes. I don't see it either way.

Bob asked him if that is a pitcher he would like to have for depth. He said sure they would like to have him but also hinted it was highly unlikely.

To be clear, Gallardo was suggested by McCown as an option. Gallardo was not a name brought up by Shapiro.

The title of this thread is very misleading.

Does any one know of a better FA tracker than Spotrac or Espn? One that shows if guys have draft pick compensation or not?

These are the remaining FA starters.

Wait this isn't even accurate...Norris signed in Atlanta and Morrow stayed in SD... boo ESPN

Blue Jays have been in contact with free-agent pitcher Gallardo

Post#15 » by Traps92 » Thu Jan 14, 2016 10:53 pm

The Toronto Blue Jays have been in contact with free-agent pitcher Yovani Gallardo, according to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith.

President Mark Shapiro has made it known that he believes rotation depth is “a clear need” for the Blue Jays and told Prime Time Sports Wednesday that Gallardo is the type of pitcher the team would look at.

“He’s the kind of guy that would make us better. He’s the kind of guy you’d like to have,” Shapiro told Bob McCown and Arash Madani. “Whether or not, from a resource perspective, we still have enough to make a move like that, I think that’s still a variable that exists. But we do have some flexibility still. Thinking about how we use those resources is still a question.”

Msn, either this is being very well played - passing up on other guys to pursue the one they wanted -or we're getting another first class jerking around from management. It has a Yu Darvish kind of plot line. It's ours, it's ours, it's ours,.... it's not. Sigh.

If they want depth. Take a cheap gamble on one of these guys. No draft pick required and at a fraction of the cost.

1. Doug Fister
2. Tim Lincecum
3. Justin Masterson
4. Matt Latos
5. Alfredo Simon
6. Cliff Lee

....... no?

Or... Gallardo's agent gets wind of the non-committal comments made by Shapiro and decides to leak some bs to raise his client's value. Not buying that, there are other options that won't cost picks. Shapiro won't want to give away his first pick under his regime unless he's getting back a difference maker. Gallardo is good but there are comparable options that won't cost you a comp. pick.

Can't believe this group can't see past the false reporting. They ran with a BS story. It's even in the previous comments and the reason the thread title was changed.

My sense is that front office staff knows what they're doing when it comes to pitchers. Gallardo would provide depth, but isn't a saviour. He was always quite overrated, but if memory serves me correct could also serve useful as a pretty good bat haha
