Jays' arbitration decisions and settlements

Post#1 » by dagger » Fri Jan 15, 2016 4:28 pm

Saunders accepts a one year deal for $2.9m, avoiding the hearing.

Steve Delabar agrees to 1yr/$835,000

Cecil signs for $3.8m

Storen gets $8.375m - It seems as if there are reliever settlements above projection for quite a few around MLB. Jeff Passan says it's a trend.

Aaron Loup gets $1,050,000

Did we really have to give Delabar a contract? Surely there's someone else that can be terrible and useless for less money.

Don't even understand why Saunders get a raise of 250 K, when he did nothing last year, basically out all year.

And Delabar getting 325K raise after imploding, and basically being triple A pitcher.

There's always a hope that he can go back to playing the way he did back when he was an all star lol.

I don't think he's that bad of a risk for $275K above the minimum. Especially with limited bullpen options in AAA.

Saunders getting $2.9 baffles me a little bit though.

He barely pitched in the majors and when he did he was awful. Maybe I don't understand the arbitration process but if it went to arbitration surely he wouldn't have been awarded a raise, right?

I also don't get why they didn't just let Saunders go to arbitration as well.

Maybe the Saunders raise is "sorry our sprinkler destroyed your knee" compensation.

I didn't expect Delabar to be back, mostly because I thought he was ticked at the organization. He must have thought he couldn't do any better elsewhere.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Well you know as well as anyone that RP's are volatile season to season. Delabar did pitch well in AAA last season and has pitched well in the majors in 2013. It doesn't cost much here to see if he can re-find his way even if it's a long shot.

At worst, he's a depth signing for Buffalo who provides insurance against injuries at the major league level. He's not the difference between signing an FA or taking on a modest amount of extra salary in a trade.

I really don't have any problems with these deals. Nothing outlandish.

Nats gonna sign Revere for 8.376M just for kicks.

Seriously, I'd rather Shapiro was in on that arb case than Rizzo... seems odd.

These are all reasonable arb deals. Let's not nickel and dime ourselves, folks.

For future reference, Dallas Keuchel got a record $7.25m, highest ever one year deal says Haymen for a 1st time are player. Others who got more like Kimbrel or Kershaw got it by taking multi-year deals.
