Gallardo: 29yrs old / Career ERA 3.66 / Seasons pitched more than 172 innings: 7 (every season since 2009)
Happ: 33yrs old / Career ERA 4.13 / Seasons pitched more than 172 innings: 0
Wonderful to see the team is in good hands since Alex left...

I guess we paid a premium price because he's a lefty. Both pitchers are mediocre. Happ will come back down to earth pitching in AL East again, but should be solid enough as a 4-5 starter

Wasn't Gallardo tied to a draft pick compensation? Also, is neither an option here?

Terrible thread that completely disregards the value of a 1st round draft pick.

Going down this rabbit hole is going to do no good for anyone. Let's just wait and see how Happ pitches, before we rip him apart. As others have pointed out, the 1st as comp is huge, and certainly not something to be looked over.
The season cannot get here soon enough.

Yes continue to drink your Kool-Aid Randle, inspiring as always.
How about not paying a 36 yr old starter who has never thrown 173 innings 14 million dollars in the last season of his contract?
Don't want to give up a 1st to sign Gallardo? Perfectly sound argument. If you are going to defend Happ's contract you are on the fringe of being brainwashed.
Happ's contact is insane, its completely legitimate to have a discussion about it.

Go look up what the value of a MLB 1st round pick is and come back when you are ready to troll Shapiro more effectively. Thanks.

Oh **** off already. Why didn't 29 other teams sign Gallardo then?

What? Have you seen the contracts handed out to mediocre pitchers this year?
Wei-Yin Chen: 5 years/80mil
Mike Leake: 5 years/80mil
Jeff Samardzija: 5 years/90mil

what I wanna bring up is why did we pick up RA option instead of signing Gallardo to a deal like this. Isn't RA making more than 12mill per this year?

Read the thread. We'd have to give up a 1st round pick for Gallardo.

Isn't 3yrs of solid pitching for a team in win now mode better than a pick?

If you want to take a decade to rebuild the farm system to ever compete again.
The difference between Dickey and Gallardo is not worth a 1st round pick. Gallardo is not some star.

A lot of uneducated dumb opinions in this thread.
Gallardo has 7 straight years of declining K rates. That's disgusting.

This narrative of Gallardo being anything special is based entirely on him dominating the Blue Jays. We are talking about a guy who almost didn't get a deal before camp who was given a QO by Texas and would've cost us a pick. When you're trying to rebuild the farm, keeping comp picks unless you're signing a superstar is a pretty terrible decision.

You forgot the best of all...the Royals gave up a 1st round pick to sign Ian Kennedy for 70M.

I really don't know how to keep the stupid from being so damn vocal. It's late February and the only team willing to sacrifice a pick for the guy did so because their rotation is complete hot garbage. People think ours is bad - check out the O's.
But we want to win now who cares about the pick?!?! Just sign him bro!
That's great let me fire up MLB the Show and I'll turn off the "ownership sets payroll" slider and we're good to go!
But yo he's so much better than Happ!
Maybe try looking at more than his three starts against the Jays before starting a useless thread like this that's been discussed to death already. Nah, people need to hear me bro. Toronto Indians hur hur hur.

And those buffoons somehow won a World Series. Smh.
