Goose Gossage calls Jose Bautista a 'disgrace' for bat flip

Haven't seen this posted as a thread. Maybe it's just beating the dead horse, but a Hall of Famer absolutley s*its on Joey and the entire league basically. Worthy of discussion. Does he have a point or should they send this man to a retirement home where he belongs...?

Dementia does cause irrational outbursts of rage afterall. I absolutely loved the batflip, was sheer entertainment. Should call him batman, guy was like a bad ass action hero. Note: I'm not a diehard baseball fan, maybe that makes a difference..

I would rather make this a non issue and let it go away. These kinds of comments don't deserve attention.

That seems to be the approach Jose has taken as well!

Entitled to his own opinion but don't think he actually watched the full game and watched only the ESPN highlights. The part that had me saying "what is he talking about?" was the comment "Throwing his bat and acting like a fool, like all those guys in Toronto. [Yoenis] Cespedes, same thing."

Is he talking about the rest of the Jays celebrating the homerun?

I agree that this doesn't need attention.

I do enjoy the fact that a 60 year old man throws a temper tantrum and acts like a disrespectful fool. If anyone is acting like a disgrace/fool it is Gossage.

They need some entertainment in the game. Baseball is beautiful but when you add some emotion like what Bautista did, it gives you that rawness, mean mugging, in your face attitude that sometimes baseball needs. My friends that hate baseball or find it super boring got up when he did that. It's kind of like that dunk contest or posterization feeling and you give that little celebration in after a crazy dunk.
The bat flip honestly felt like the Pippen dunk over Ewing and proceeding to step over him or Iverson crossing up Mr. All-star head coach, cashing in the shot and stepping over him. Ah, the feels.

First of all Goose, Kirk Gibson says hi. Bet you didn't remember him in your demented rant.

Secondly, it's funny how two of the four major North American sports - hockey and baseball - have these silly, outdated enthusiasm-dampening conventions that the so-called traditionalists believe should last in perpetuity. So instead, the hockey players all grow playoff beards - which, while quaint, does nothing to popularize their sport. In fact, some of the players wear their beards poorly. There are things I don't like about the NBA and NFL - like NBA players complaining about every call/non-call - but at least they are allowed self-expression through their play and most reactions, so long as they aren't profane or overly exaggerated, like taunting. A shimmy after a three, a little swing on the rim after a dunk, a roar or other vocal expression of triumph, all allowed in the NBA, but woe unto the batter who shows a little emotion after demolishing a pitch. There are even players who get their tiny dicks in a knot over Edwin's parrot trot which I find fun.

Tim and Sid had him on last night. Goose sounded like a crazy old man. This whole thing would be a complete and total non issue if the media had anything better to talk about. Literally nobody cares except for old players. It's not like players are dancing, etc.... And how does Goose think it's not ok for a player to fling his bat, but it's ok for pitchers to throw the ball at batters heads? Such a bunch of nonsense.

He also criticized Cespedes. I always wonder about their motivations when these old white guy players call out Latin, African American players on their 'behaviour'. I'm not usually on with brushing off old people as outdated dinosaurs, but it's a fact that some are still driven by very dated biases.

Gossage is entitled to his own opinion, but it doesn't mean it's right. Let him rant and have his 15 minutes. He and his rant will be forgotten.

To be honest, I never even heard of Goose Gossage before this week.

Yep.

It's also a transparently insane thing to do, so either he's a) insane, b) drunk or c) bored and lonely. My guess is all of the above.

An article expressing the other side, much more persuasive than the Goose:

The idea that someone should be thrown at for celebrating home runs is ridiculous. It's **** assault. Guys can get severely hurt. These old pitchers that liked to do that are cowards.

Not to mention the tangent he went off on about Cam Newton. A lot of underlying racial tension there for sure.

I was hoping Tim and Sid would ask Goose for his opinion on Donald Trump, or about how tall he thinks the wall should be built.

Yeah exactly, I never heard of him either. Maybe he's not so dumb after all, lol.

Interesting that the sports hockey and baseball that are more conservative when it comes to celebrating over the top also are the two sports of the North American big 4 that involve brawls/fights/retribution.

Is it still 2015? Why is this relevant.
