Jays claim Jesus Montero from Mariners

Post#1 » by rarefind » Mon Mar 28, 2016 7:41 pm

http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-claim-jesus-montero-off-waivers-seattle-mariners/

The Toronto Blue Jays added depth to the organization Monday, claiming first baseman/designated hitter Jesus Montero off of waivers from the Seattle Mariners.

Montero batted .223/.250/.411 with five home runs, 19 RBI, 32 strikeouts and four walks in 116 plate appearances with Seattle last season. The 26-year-old also posted a .966 OPS with 18 homers in 98 games at triple-A.

All things considered, I don't get this. Montero cannot catch. He would be behind Edwin, Cola, and Smoak as far as guys who can only DH or play 1b. Has to remain on 25 man or be exposed to waivers on the way back to Buffalo.

Yea I'm not sure the point of this either if he's not gonna play catcher. Even if he did, he'd be an emergency backup to Martin since there's no way he'd ever be catching Dickey.

PS I just gave you your 4000th And1 ;)

They're obviously going to try and sneak him through waivers, y'all ;)

Indeed.

Jesus Montero... I remember when Yankees traded him for Pineda... At the time looked like a good deal for both clubs. Fast forward to today and neither player has really panned out due to Pineda being injured and Montero nor being as good of hitter in the majors as he was/is in AAA

I assume he'll get there... How many teams need a DH that can't hit?

In all honesty, I haven't followed much of Montero's career, mostly since he started with the Yankees.

Given that the Jays are completely void of any catching depth, is having Montero catch some games at AAA a possibility, or is he just so terrible/injury prone back there, that there is no hope?

Anything is possible with the Jays (see Colabello in LF), but he's no catcher anymore.

Would it be nice to be the team that can teach Montero to hit a breaking pitch and therefore become a very good MLB calibre hitter? Yes, it would. Is that likely to happen? No, it is not. Unless Encarnacion starts on the DL, I don't imagine Montero lasts in the organization past re-waivering nor would it matter if he does. Stranger things have happened, but Montero figuring anything out at this point is a remote enough possibility that we should all have better things to occupy ourselves with.

if you asked a Mariners fan back in 2013, if Smoak, Saunders, Montero would pretty much be given away to the Jays in a couple of season, they would have laughed at you and walked away. These three guys were young cornerstones of a promising rebuild.

They had so many elite prospects but in the end the only one that amounted to anything was Felix Hernandez. I don't remember that GM's name but he is a poster boy of how not to rebuild a team. Like the Edmonton Oilers of the MLB. Looks like they are headed in the right direction now though.

Poor sob bought into the Yankee prospect hype on Montero.

If he sneaks through waivers, is he a reclamation project backup plan for 2017 post-Edwin DH possibilities? That's what they were musing on the FAN.

Those were my thoughts. Our organization has done pretty well with converting failed prospects into excellent hitters. I expect next year we'll have Colla playing DH and Smoak at first, but Smoak is also a free agent so he could potentially sign elsewhere. I believe we still have rights to Matt Hague as well.
