I'm not crying for Price or the Red Sox. Jays find some life!

While we don’t yet know the full extent of David Price's injury, I'm not surprised it's happened and I won't be surprised it results in full-blown Tommy John surgery.

If anything, this has been a long time coming.

Poor Price gets beat up for not winning in the postseason, but he's a major reason why the teams he's played for keep getting there. On average, he's logged over 220 innings in his last six seasons. A good amount of those innings have been under high stress, short rest circumstances.

Just ask the 2015 Toronto Blue Jays, who rented and abused Price in their postseason run and pitched him out of the rotation on short rest before calling him out of the bullpen. That, along with the fact that Price is a strikeout pitcher. He doesn’t rely on contact, but on Ks. And that often drives up his pitch count higher than some other pitchers who reach the same innings threshold.

Over the last two seasons, we've wondered if the Price was wrong - health wise, that is. His velocity has trended down and his command has wavered. He's been more hittable. All that and he's suffered previous elbow flare-up with the Tampa Bay Rays, Detroit Tigers and the Red Sox.

If he is indeed injured, Boston will have a tough time filling in Price's spot. The loss of money and productivity isn't easy to fill (or stomach) for any team, but especially not for one in an American League that's seen a ramp-up in competitive acquisitions.

The Yankees are retooling their pitching staff, while the Jays already have a healthy and dominant staff in place. Losing 200 innings of Cy Young-calibre ball is a punch in the Red Sox' gut now and well into 2018.

Why it's not a surprise that David Price needs TJ surgery: he's a pitcher. It all pretty much boils down to that. Everybody that has tried to predict it has failed. The more you pitch, the more likely you are to tear your UCL.

That would be a huge blow for the Red Sox. And the Price contract will start to look like an albatross.

Lawrie gets outrighted by the ChiSox. Bring him home (literally)!

So, AA got JD for ...? I guess Barreto's doing okay in the minors, but how far away is he?

Graveman was okay last year, in that way that pitch-to-contact grounder artists are. Barreto's in AAA; probably makes the bigs this year at some point if all goes well.

But yeah, not a great haul, that.

Favourites for the division for sure. But at that point the playoffs are a complete crap shoot.

Even without Price, they should still be division faves. But the gap is definitely smaller. Good thing they got Sale but they'll have a lot of dead money going to guys not playing/starting.

I'm curious as to effect the loss of Ortiz has.

Of course they're loaded with young kids who will just move up a spot, but that kind of production is nearly impossible to replicate.

Honestly surprised it took this long for someone to convert Gose. He's hopeless at the plate, and his outfield defense was never what it ought to be, but 95 from the left side always has value.

That trade looked bad for the Pirates when they made it and it's getting even worse.

Bo Schultz had TJ surgery today and is out for the season.

A tough one for him. I presume it opens up a spot on the 40-man roster.

It's terrible news for Schultz, but with a couple slight silver linings. He's out of options and had a high degree of likelihood of getting DFA'd; he'll now at least get a major league salary for the full season. He'll also advance his service time clock by a full year; as a result, if he recovers well and can nail down a major league job in 2018, whether with us or elsewhere, he won't be trapped on rookie minimum island anymore.

You'd much rather not have a career-altering surgery, but if you're going to need it, spring training while on the 40-man roster is a hell of a lot better than mid-April.

Good point re: the salary. If he's wise with that money (~$550K) he can really set himself for life after baseball in case the surgery is career-ending. After tax that's enough to pay for a quality education, start a business, or pay off a good chunk of really nice house.

Also, Lawrie is a douchebag. Can't say I'm surprised his career has flamed out.
