The "What If" Trades of Toronto
I started this thread in the Raptors thread and it was very successful. The Jays board is too serious. Let's cool down and have some fun.
What are some "Rumored" Trades that the Jays were talked of doing but Never happened?
I'll Start....
---------------------------------------
- Alex Rios
For
- Matt Cain or Tim Lincecum
*** I remember Rios was an elite prospect just making strides in the MLB. Jays were talking trade with SF. Giants offered Matt Cain but Jays wanted Lincecum. SF never agreed and the trade died out.
Anymore?

Wasn't there one of Jose Bautista for Trout? And Toronto said no?

wow... Serious?
I heard Bautista for Colby Rasmus after Jose' first 50 Homer season in Toronto.
If Jays said no to Trout.... wow. Just wow.

I think this was just after 2011 when Jose had two monster seasons and Trout hadn't had one of his yet

Wasnt there a Halladay for Kershaw trade discussed at one point? Not sure how serious those discussions were or if it was just rumor

Wasn't the offer the Jays made for Ricky Henderson, the same offer the Jays made for Randy Johnson. We accepted the Oakland's offer because they replied first.
Seattle's GM replied late because he was playing golf, but he wanted to accept the trade.

Re: The "What If" Trades of Toronto
Blue Jays had a serious trade offer for Roy Halladay from the Rangers. A prospect package centre around Derek Holland plus more. Jays wanted to accept.... but Halladay said No, as he had a no movement right in his contract.
He was later traded to Philly.

Never heard about this one but it does seem unlikely that the Mariners GM would be golfing on July 31st in the pre cell phone era. Not saying he wasn't, just seems odd.
EDIT: Isn't Google a wonderful thing. I found the story you're talking about immediately. Damm. Could have had Randy Johnson for Karsey and Timlin.

Re: The
Apparently JPR turned down David Wright (then in the Sally league) for Jose Cruz Jr. at the deadline when he was going into arbitration (he was non-tendered).
There's one involving Carlos Pena, but I'm not remembering the details.
We asked for Kershaw for Halladay, but I don't think that was seriously considered.

It's only speculation right now, but if real word comes that it's being discussed-- I think a Bautista for Puig deal is one of the more interesting swaps to cross our doorway in a long, long time.

Wow, Jays should jump all over that. Bautista is breaking down. Puig would be a steal. Get it done ASAP.
Though, LA would want more. I can't see them do a 1 for 1 deal.

Couple of Seasons ago, the Baltimore Orioles wanted Jeff Hoffman and Max Pentecost for their GM Dan Duquete. He was going to be the new President of the Jays.
Jays walked away. Eventually hired Mark Shapiro from Cleveland as we all know.

Pat Gillick was looking for that something extra in 1993 to put the Blue Jays over the top for a second straight World Series title. He was talking to Oakland about Rickey Henderson, and also Seattle about towering lefty Randy Johnson who was just beginning to come into his own at age 29. Gillick preferred the Johnson deal that would have sent right-handers Steve Karsay and Mike Timlin to the Mariners. Trouble was Seattle GM Woody Woodward was out golfing and in the era before cell phones, Gillick couldn't get a hold of him. In the meantime, A's GM Sandy Alderson called back and accepted the Henderson deal for Karsay and a player to be named later (outfielder Jose Herrera). But even then, there was a minor hitch. Rickey wanted to be compensated for giving up his right of refusal on a trade. While that was being negotiated, Woodward called Gillick back and wanted to do the Johnson deal. Gillick had already given his word to Alderson and turned down the Johnson deal. As the clock ticked down, the Jays finally got the Rickey Henderson deal completed.
In the short term, all of this paid off for the Blue Jays as they won their second straight championship. Rickey wasn't a huge contributor, but he was always a threat for the other team to worry about at the plate and on the bases. Henderson, though, was in a contract year and left as a free agent in the off-season.
Would the Jays have been better off with Randy Johnson? Hard to say. There is no question Johnson's career really took off from that point. Through the '93 season, Johnson's record was 75-69 and he had been an All-Star twice and a runner-up for the Cy Young Award. After that he went 228-97 was an All-Star eight more times and won the Cy Young five times. Yet for all of that, he only won the World Series once, with Arizona in 2001.
The Blue Jays in 1997 went out and signed Roger Clemens as a free agent after he opted to leave Boston. Clemens won back-to-back Cy Young's with the Blue Jays yet they didn't make it to the post-season and attendance didn't get the boost most expected, even on the days Clemens was pitching.
You wonder as well if the Jays had already landed Johnson, would they even have bothered to pursue Clemens in '97? If they did, the Jays could have had the same double barreled threat Arizona did when they had Johnson and Curt Schilling and defeated the Yankees in 2001. It makes for a great talking point, but at the end of the day, the Blue Jays still have that second straight World Series crown from 1993. Everything else is supposition.

Last season; Stroman for Cueto... We said no.

Boston tried to trade for Roy Halladay. A package centred around a young stud named Clay Bucholze. Jays decided they wanted Way Way more to trade their Ace in division.

I know this isn't likely to happen but LA seriously has a hard time figuring out what they want to do with Puig. He has character/personality issues. I wouldn't make him out to be "Manny being Manny" levels but I wonder if he will manage to hit his true potential.

The Jays would almost certainly have to give up more than just Jose with the difference in age and contract status.
