Passan says 3 x $20m plus $5m buyout of option.

So probably something like $18m/$18m/$19m, with a $5m buyout on the final season. Yeah, his agent bungled this one.

Edit: Passan corrected. So $65m guaranteed including the buyout. Probably maxes out at the 4 years, $80m we originally offered. Still bungled this one, but by $5m less.

As a Jays fan I'm pissed and upset he's gone...especially to Cleveland...

But I'm not unhappy with how the front office played it. They had the price point hit on the nose. Whether or not they knew other teams wouldn't be interested, they gave a legitimate offer that holds water...as the past weeks have clearly shown.

So we get a late first round pick or the Indians competitive balance pick?

With Carrasco and Brantley returning, they were going to get better anyways.

There's no direct transfer of picks anymore. We'll get a pick after the first round proper, while Cleveland's 1st ceases to exist.

He's the third QO'd free agent to sign with a different team, so the first round is now at least three picks shorter, and will likely end up being four or five, given that Trumbo and Bautista are still outstanding.

it sucks both parties involved predicted the market to go one way and it went the opposite.

Understandable, but it still leaves a sour taste in my mouth

So his agent screwed this up. He and our fans would have been happier with the original offer right away. But he does just fine with 3 good years with a good team. Sad to see him go, but we likely played it right asset-wise.

And so did the Jays. A lose lose situation all around.

I understand the scenario that the Jays didn't want to be left with nothing when Eddie declined the 4 year/80 million dollar deal. I understand Eddie going elsewhere now that we really don't have the space for him in the lineup but I'm really going to stew when Pearce gets hurt for 2 months and Smoak is playing every day.

I understand why people think that...but they flat out rejected the 4/80 offer the Jays gave him. They didn't say "we need more time"...they simply said no.

And stated at the time that he had bigger offers on the table. Which was either wishful thinking, or he thought that he could get the Jays to over a $100m commit. Whoops.

Might as well trade Josh at this point, he is on the wrong side of 30. Time to rebuild. Jays are not beating a healthy Indians team, or the Red Sox.

I actually missed that...did he or Kinzer actually say that? That's just bad and grimy business.

If that is the case, the Blue Jays handled this as best as they possibly could have. They knew their price point, and stuck with it. If Kinzer/EE said they have bigger offers and rejected the 4/80 Shatkins offered, they had every right and justifiable reasoning to go after Morals.

That'd be sweet if there was an opt out after 1 year. Then smoak would be gone and Pierce would only have 1 year left and be easily movable and we could potentially resign EE and not give up a 1st after he nets us a comp pick them a year lol

#dreamer

I do love the fact that we didn't resign a DH for 20 mill per and he got us a pick but sad to see him gone...
