Tepera to the bullpen in his place.

Well, unless he's pulled back and stays aboard, this closes the book on what turned out to be a less-than-good trade.

Storen was awful for the Jays. While Revere has been underwhelming for the Nationals.

Let's call it a Wash and move on.

Just terrible luck for the Jays. The guy has a very good track record and is in the prime of his career. He just fell off a cliff. It looks like his performance post-Papelbon wasn't a fluke.

I called for getting rid of him yesterday and am pleased that yesterday was the last straw.

That was inevitable. He's a shell of his former self.

According to Shi Davidi of Rogers Sportsnet, the reward from Drew Storen’s time with the Blue Jays was that his presence allowed Aaron Sanchez to end up in the rotation, opened up left field for Michael Saunders and created a role for Ezequiel Carrera, who is out of options and may have been otherwise lost.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-benefits-storen-trade-didnt-come-mound/

TORONTO – The payoff from the acquisition of Drew Storen didn’t come from the right-hander’s work on the mound for the Toronto Blue Jays. There’s no way to sugar-coat it — that end of the deal worked out terribly, given the role he was expected to fill.

Rather, the reward from Storen’s time with the Blue Jays, which came to an end Sunday when he was designated for assignment, was that his presence allowed Aaron Sanchez to end up in the rotation, opened up left field for Michael Saunders (who was nearly traded for Jay Bruce, but that’s another matter) and created a role for Ezequiel Carrera, who is out of options and may have been otherwise lost.

Those are all by-products of the Jan. 8 trade that sent left-fielder Ben Revere to the Washington Nationals for Storen. The Blue Jays did the right thing by recognizing they couldn’t give him the innings he needed to get himself right. They needed Storen to be much better and could use his roster spot more effectively.

“Obviously accountable for that, that’s not the outcome you’re looking for, that’s not the outcome Drew Storen is looking for, either,” said general manager Ross Atkins. “If you look at the rest of the team and how that impacted some other guys, not that there are benefits to subtraction, but sometimes there are opportunities given to other guys because of the way a roster changes.”

Later, he added, “it got to the point where we had better alternatives, really.”

Those alternatives include set-up man Jason Grilli, whose late May pickup has been life raft for the Blue Jays bullpen, and fellow right-hander Bo Schultz, who’s earning more and more confidence since his return from hip surgery.

Thought the trade was the right move at the time, Revere was nothing special, but man I didn't see Storen struggling this bad. It's crazy to see the ups and downs relievers go through, but he was a hot garbage all year...

The statement is incorrect on most levels.

I know Storan has been bad but I don't see the point in replacing him with Tepera. If that's your replacement, might as well ride it out longer until the add a pitcher via trade or some other avenue.

That's some serious sugar coating. They were always going to trade Revere, but it doesn't change the fact they traded him for a player who didn't perform.

If Revere could have been traded elsewhere for somebody better than Storan, you're absolutely right, but we can't assume they would have found another deal to the liking of both teams either. Or they could have entered the season with Revere with the plan to eventually trade him and that chain of events still wouldn't have happened exactly as they did.

What a turn of events. Trade at the time was a great move for the team which obviously didn't work out. Just a gut instinct but he never looked comfortable here. I'm sure he latches on somewhere and dominates again.

Grilli was struggling when we got him and he's pitched well. Storan hasn't had control problems and he's had a lot of bad luck on balls in play. Someone will sign him once he clears waivers. Not sure he'll dominate with his slower fastball but I could see him being effective.

I really thought it was a good trade at the time and that he'd turn it around here with the Papelbon saga being behind him. Wow was I wrong.

I'm not saying they could have found a better deal at the time since at the time it appeared to be a great trade. I'm saying to call it a good trade purely because of addition by subtraction doesn't really make sense when the player we shipped out should have fetched us something better than a DFA'd reliever.

Nothing to do with comfort he lost velocity on his fastball and got rocked over and over. Unless he miraculously starts throwing around 94 again he's gonna be **** everywhere.

Storen is garbage. I think they were riding it out for too long already. He was costing games. Best to cut their losses and move on.

and Tapera has been dominant in the minors. Makes sense to give him a look. Maybe he is legit and sticks around. Otherwise he is trade bait. It's the cheap alternative to giving up assets for a top reliever. Tapera has been a top reliever in the minors. What's there to lose?
