I'll preface this by saying the chance of the Jays trading impending FA Bautista while still in playoff contention is pretty much zero, unless they are blown away. However, for sake of discussion, I'm curious as to what the Nats would have to offer in order to make the Jays brass seriously consider a deal... Would it be a deal involving one of Trea Turner or Giolito, and if so, is that enough to make the Jays consider? Would the Nats even be willing to give up one or even two blue chip prospects for Bautista who's not signed past this year? To complicate this scenario even more is that Bautista would have the right to veto any trade due to his 10 & 5 rights, so I imagine he'd have to be pretty confident that a) the Jays probably won't resign him in the offseason, and/or b) he believes the Nats have a better shot at winning the World Series...

Again, a very improbable scenario for many reasons, but might spark a fun discussion...

Sorry, I believe I was in the process of editing my post to include that fact when you wrote this... Again, there are a lot of factors which make this improbable, however just thought it would be a fun discussion.

He should consider it if it's a contending team. He'll have a first round compensation bounty on him as well which will limit the market for him.

Don't think anything will get done, but figured Bautista rumours would come up after the Upton trade.

Bautista might actually waive those rights to go to the Nats if they Jays ask him to waive. The Nationals are leading their division and have shot at the world series. On top of that, if he were traded, Jose wouldn't have draft pick compensation attached to him, so there may be more suitors compared to if teams had to sign him to huge dollars plus give up a draft pick.

Shi Davidi doesn't believe time should be spent on the report that the Jays and Nationals talked about a deal for Jose Bautista, arguing there's no reason to trade away a major offensive asset when the team is in the playoff hunt.

Thanks for the post Polo, it was a good listen. However, I think we can all agree that Davidi isn't locked into the Jays front office in terms of getting inside info and breaking trades. Therefore, I always take his opinion with a grain of salt... By no means, am I saying his take is wrong in this case because it's more than likely that he's just making an assumption based on the odds which we'd all agree that a deal for Bautista in any scenario is very unlikely, but I don't ever take his input as the end all be all - like a Woj for instance.

It's not very often you see 2 contenders swap players at the deadline. Just doesn't seem likely.

If you're Bautista this actually makes some sense as you remove the comp. pick from beside your name. I think Bautista is most valuable to the Jays, I don't think you are going to get much for a rental player who still hasn't shown much this year. Probably much better served just letting him play for the rest of the season and hope he returns to form.

The Nats are not going to surrender the prospect we'd want (Turner) and their rotation has been depleted a bit so we can't exactly get pitching back. The only guy I'd be half interested in would be Joe Ross and he's up a 95 innings pitched and may be on some limit. We don't seem to be good partners for a trade.

Doubt the Jays will move him for PR reasons alone.

I totally understand what you're saying that Bautista is a rental, but the Yankees got a good package for Chapman who is also a FA after this season.

I totally understand what you're saying that Bautista is a rental, but the Yankees got a good package for Chapman who is also a FA after this season.

Chapman has proven his worth this year with his 100+ mph fastball, Bautista not so much to this point unfortunately. Whatever we yield in a trade won't be much. You could make the argument that Bautista *could* be much more important to us than in comparison to a watered down offer based on the merits off his injury/struggles this year.

Unless you're getting an elite prospect package, the rest of the season of Bautista + a comp pick is more valuable provided the CBA rules stay similar.

Bautista is a legitimate hitter who can change the outcome of a game. Yes, his #'s are down, however a lot of that can be attributed to his freak turf toe injury - Encarnacion has 50% more at bats than Bautista this season. Prorate Bautista's #'s based on Encarnacion number of at bats, and Bautista has 18 hr, 63 runs and 63 Rbi's... To me that type of production is more valuable than a closer.

Yes, but the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The Cubs have more wins than anyone in baseball, I am sure they believe Chapman will factor in quite a bit.

You can't simply pro rate AB's in this case when the question is regarding how healthy he is and if he can even play another 50-60 games in the outfield to finish the regular season. NL teams have to figure out a way to put him in the field.

If true, they must see him replacing Zimmerman at 1B, because Harper and Werth aren't moving out of the corner outfield spots.

If they were foolish enough to part with Trea Turner, I suppose I could live with a Turner-Travis middle infield for the next five years, great hardship though it would be. Unless Turner or similar prospect is coming back, I don't see how the Jays could be persuaded to move Bautista.

If Turner is coming back, Tulo would probably be moved for salary relief and a prospect or three, either now or in the offseason.

There's basically a 0% chance the Jays trade anyone of importance off their roster.
