Not a terrible deal but this team isn't going to contend.

SO - 1st Base/DH is Pearce/Morales/Smoak ?

A little ugly, but I don't blame management for taking conservative approach. They better spend somewhere though.

No problem with this either, especially given his flexibility to play a few multiple positions. If he can stay healthy, he could do some serious damage. Too bad it's a huge if.

But think he'll fit in quite nicely in that club house.

Based on what exactly? Pearce had a higher OPS than Edwin last season and a Pearce/Moreland platoon could easily outhit Edwin in 2017 if Edwin shows any regression whatsoever.

Some baseball fans are forever overrating big names as the path to contention.

On paper this team is a lot uglier than last year. Doesn't mean we can't contend, but we still have a TON of issues on the roster. Bullpen is paper thin. Lineup is very weak. Current outfield is Carrera, Upton and Pillar. That may be the worst offensive outfield in baseball. There is still time, but not a ton of money left to spend. Our payroll is already where it was on opening day last season.

Also - having a higher OPS than Edwin is only relevant if he is playing regularly. Pearce is extremely injury prone and has never had 400 PA's in a single season. You really can't compare him to Edwin based on OPS alone. His overall production doesn't even touch Edwin.

I still like this as a value signing. Similar to the Morales value, but it is highly unlikely that Pearce/Morales will equal the run production of Bautista/EE.

It's tempting, but don't feed the trolls!

Love this deal. High risk/reward considering the surgery, but Pearce is a great hitter and defensively versatile. Probably not an outfielder anymore, but he could fill-in in a pinch, and also could spell Travis at 2B occasionally. He's projected as a 1.5 WAR player for 2017 so he could earn his entire 2 year salary this coming season, as long as he's back in action sometime in April. If he stays healthy he could reasonably be worth 2-3 times his salary.

Now, use that money we saved and go get Dexter Fowler.

This is an okay deal. I like Pearce a lot. But combined with the Morales/Smoak moves, not a very inspiring lineup right now. Lots of work left to do.

Inexplicable roster building so far from this regime. Which isn't an indication that they're necessarily wrong. But I don't know if it inspires much enthusiasm.

It's December 5th so every team has a bunch of holes on paper right now.

Last year we entered the off-season with massive holes in starting pitching, the holes we have now will be significantly easier to fill than those were.

Nice. Hopefully he can play the majority of 1B to keep Smoak on the bench.

He does provide some outfield depth so maybe now Shapiro/Atkins can get some everyday OFs.

Seeing as he is better at hitting LHPs I doubt it... he's a platoon/bench player if you want to maximize his skills. Ideally, you have someone better than Smoak as the other side of the platoon
