I always find this pretty accurate (aside from the fact that we haven't completed roster).

Not playoffs this year. Unfortunately. Though I maintain hope...

The key is that Jose's and Upton's dollars come off the payroll next year. If we can also clear 1 of either Tulo's or Martin's contracts off the books at the deadline via trade, we are in a better position to restock by either promoting younger talent from the farm or searching for value in the FA market.

We are barely paying Upton. Out of his 17 million earnings this year San Diego is paying something like 12 million of it

next year's moves will be more determinative.

for those who cringe at the site of Pearce's defense in the outfield for 2017 I heard on some Sportsnet radio interview that Ryan Goins is practicing and training for consideration in the outfield this season (in hopes of making the major league roster out of spring training). File this in the "for whatever its worth" category for I for sure heard this listening to those Sportsnet.ca audio clips they post all the time.

Ryan Goins will not make this team unless there is an injury or trade. Also the jays are only paying 1 million to upton this year.

So we can have two of our outfielders on the bottom 3rd of the line-up? Doesn't make any sense.

Pretty sure Pompey wasn't listed there a few days ago.

More of a desperate attempt to make Goins relevant. He can't even hit well enough to be a shortstop, there's no way he hits well enough to be a corner outfielder. He'd have a better chance at joining the bullpen.

He should be spending the entire winter working on bunting. He still won't be an everyday player, but that would make him considerably more useful.

Same applies for Pillar... bunting would be an improvement on his weak hitting performances. Station-to-station baseball is better than a near automatic out. At one point (albeit in the minors), his hitting surpassed his fielding ability

The only thing I can guarantee about this depth chart is that it will include some different names before opening day.

But I'm glad Barney is back. Too bad Goins was put dealt last winter when he likely had some trade value.

Just repeating what I heard on Sportsnet...........

I can live with Bautista's short comings defensively because of what he can do at the plate (and I expect a lot if he stays healthy) but Upton brings nothing to the table. Maybe Pompey will put it all together this year like Pillar did.

Upton is a plus defender who can hit LHP and be used as a pinch runner. As long as he's employed properly, he can be an asset. I would think that they're still looking to add a LH hitting OF who's better than Carrera to platoon with him.

So it looks like they'll start Biagini in the AAA rotation. I don't like the move. He's proven to be pretty great out of the bullpen, while his minor league numbers as a starter don't inspire any confidence. He's great a keeping the ball in the park, but he allows a ton of baserunners. His stuff plays well in the bullpen, but I'm not convinced he'd fare well facing lineups 2+ times a game. Also, he'll be 27 this May. That's pretty late to be making the switch. I was in favour of Sanchez starting again, but he was only 23 and has far more dominating stuff than Biagini. Also he was going to start for the big club, not toil away in AAA.

Also, from a team standpoint we have real needs in late inning relief. I'm high on Barnes, but I'd like him to prove himself before giving him high leverage spots. Biagini has already proven himself. Why would we want to weaken the big club to try and develop a guy in a role that he may very well not succeed at? Hopefully they reconsider their thinking before the season.

Still hoping Smoak gets moved, but they don't seem interested in taking back a couple bats in return. They for whatever reason like the platoon option with Pearce.

I think the reason they feel they need smoak is Pearce. Terrible track record with injuries. In fact, he is recovering from surgery right now and is far from a guarantee to be healthy at the start of camp. There is a realistic possibility that Jose becomes the first baseman at some point in the year.

I would like to see Pompey given the chance this year. With our budget constraints we should consider moving Carrera (and Barney). Start Bautista, Pillar and Pompey. Upton can be 4th OF (he is only owed 1 million).
