Yahoo: Bautista left 31.5 million in guaranteed money on the table to re-sign in Toronto

Read more hereThe soft free-agent market finally bore fruit for Bautista come mid-January. He received a three-year offer, according to two sources. (Bautista would not confirm that but did not deny it when offered the chance.) He had well over $50 million in guaranteed money on the table. (Ditto.) And ultimately, he signed what is in essence a one-year, $18.5 million deal because “you look at the factors – loving the city you play in, marketplace, a chance to win, taxes, endorsements – in a balance and make the decision you think is best for you. And understanding I came off a tough year, where I necessarily didn’t have the most fun I had playing in the big leagues, this was the best place.”

If taxes were a positive consideration, the offer had to come from a team in California or New York.

Any contract from another team would have given the Jays a comp pick, I believe.

While risky, i think it was a smart move for him to gamble on himself.
$31M shouldn't be that difficult to beat if he has a respectable season.

This. If he has a good season this year, he'll easily get a two year, $40+ million deal (maybe even a three year deal). Don't forget that he'll no longer have draft pick compensation attached to him as well.

The interpretation of this is not fully accurate. On a per year basis, he actually signed a better deal. $18.5 million x 3 years is more money. Assuming a healthy season, if he is anywhere near his previous production, he would easily get more money over 3 years. And with a club / player option, so long as he performs, he will still end up with more money.
At the end of the day, it was only a matter of whether he believes in himself or if he wanted the security of lower pay but more guarantee. By signing with the Jays, he is actually getting paid more on a year-by-year basis.

He'll be turning 38 next year. It won't be easy to beat that kind of offer.
