Re: David Price Unhappy in Boston
Let's be honest, the Toronto media would have been all over his ass too if he had signed a contract like that here and **** the bed like he did last season. Then he starts this year off with shoulder issues. I can see why Boston media/fans would be showing some frustration.
Nice guy and all, but the Jays dodged a huge bullet by letting him go.

I would like him as our starting pitcher for the regular season but not for playoffs.

I know that Jays fans are cheering against any Boston starter, but next year is the big one: Price has an opt-out after 2018, and we should all very much want him to opt in. Because no matter how good he is now, the odds of him being worth close to $32m a year from ages 33-36 aren't that great.

**** your asterisk.

Re: David Price Unhappy in Boston
Why you never sign should a big contract especially for a pitcher and especially for one in his 30's. Toronto media was tearing he FO to shreds last year for not signing him, i bet we dont hear a peep from them now.
Edit: Oh and add Greinke to this list... Has yet to hit 90mph in Spring Training. Zimmermann too putting up a 0.2 WAR season filled with injuries.

Re: David Price Unhappy in Boston
Well I can't say I blame Boston fans. They invested a lot in him and he's on the decline. If he was on our team and he took up that much of our budget I wouldn't be like 'it's ok that he's declining and can't pitch in the postseason, because he's a nice guy'

Re: David Price Unhappy in Boston
I never thought about it before, but elite athletes who have dominated at every level just aren't used to how people behave around them when they are underperforming. They assume everyone loves them for who they are, they don't get the whole conditional aspect of it.
Fans aren't the players' mothers. We're their fathers.

Re: David Price Unhappy in Boston
Price could be giving his entire salary away to a charity of the fan's choosing but if he doesn't perform to their liking on the field, it's within their right to be pissed about it. If he was a prick making 40 billion a year and they were winning world series after world series, he would still be idolized. Bottom line is: produce. Winning is everything. Being a nice guy doesn't make up for losses.

Re: David Price Unhappy in Boston
Price is one of those guys who really cares about how everyone perceives him (a lot like Stroman). I think he saw the love everyone in Toronto had for him and was disappointed that Boston didn't treat him the same way. But that's the thing when you sign a max contract in a new city. The fans of that city are expecting a big return on their team's investment. If you can't deliver, you'll be criticized by the fans despite how well-meaning you are as a person off the field. Same goes for media treatment. No writer is going to cover your charity organization when the biggest story is about you choking in the playoffs again.
I wish I could say I wish Price well, but considering that he plays for a rival, I hope his struggles continue and he declines the opt-out so the Red Sox are stuck with that anchor of a contract for the next 6 years lol.

It doesn't matter. Paying him $200 million would have been a disaster anyways. Even the critics about him leaving have figured that out by now.

this Toronto thing about loving and appreciating players. there's no correlation between that and their contract demands, never mind between our appreciation and their actual on-field performance.

He had his worst regular season since 2009 last year. He was still very good, but not worth anywhere near his salary.

I wouldn't replace him (and his contract) with any of our current SP's
and he was only marginally better than Stroman last year

Glad the Jays didnt sign him. This team has more holes than a block of swiss cheese. And the jays dont have an endless money pit. Unfortunately

Re: David Price Unhappy in Boston
I too am glad we didn't sign him, but I think people are over-reacting here. The guy led the league in IP, his BB/9 was below his career average, and his K/9 above. His FIP of 3.6 wasn't exactly disastrous. He was hurt mostly by a career-high HR/9 of 1.2, which is probably in part due to playing at Fenway. His H9 was in the 8's, but it's been that high for him a few times in his career already.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."
