I keep reading that Jose signed a 2 year deal. As if ge is playing this year to get a multiple year contract next year as a "free agent" .

Yet originally I heard it was a 3 year deal with two options that the Jays can pick up.

Is Jose a FA in 2018?
Or do the Jays have the option to keep him signed?

Its a mutual option i believe where both parties can or have to agree to it.

The Blue Jays confirmed Wednesday that Bautista has re-signed with the team, agreeing to a one-year deal with a guaranteed base salary of US$18 million. The contract includes options that could see him stay in Toronto through 2019.

Reports surfaced Tuesday that the two sides had agreed on a deal and the Blue Jays provided contract details in a news release Wednesday morning. The deal includes a $17-million mutual option for 2018 with a $500,000 buyout along with a $20-million vesting option for 2019.

It was originally reported as a 2 year deal then a 1 year deal with club options but it is a 1 year deal with a mutual option then a vesting option;

2017: $18M
2018: 17M if both Bautista and the team agrees
2019: $20M if Bautista has 300 PAs in 2018 and is physically able to play in 2019

If the 2018 option gets picked up then 2019 will likely vest easily.

I guess it is possible, but given the vesting option, it is very difficult to see a scenario where management opts in to 2018.

Why not? Bautista is coming off a 1.4 or 1.0 WAR season depending if you ask fangraphs or BR and the Jays gave him 18M on a 1 year deal. Bautista isnt a 1-1.5 WAR player as he can easily be a 2-3 WAR guy as he was a 4+ WAR player in 2015 and never below 2.9 WAR after 2010. If Bautista is 2-3 WAR player (the floor) like he is expected to be then he would definitely be worth 17M in 2018. For me the question is if Bautista puts up 2-3 WAR would he come back at 17M? I would doubt it, i am sure he would test the market again with no draft pick attached to him. If a much inferior player like Beltran can get 16M with no pick attached then i think Bautista could do better or get at least 2 years guaranteed.

If Bautista has a good year in 2017, he's declining the option. If Bautista has a bad year in 2017, management is declining the option. Either way, it's pretty unlikely we see a scenario where that 2018 option is picked up imo.

Creative but I doubt the 3 year contract comes to fruition. Say he is healthy this year, what ops range do you think he has to fall in for both sides to pick up the option?

It vests at 300g played in 17 and 18 actually so doubt that happens

Good catch. I misread it as plate appearances. 300 games in 2017 and 2018 seems very unlikely. Either way i hope Bautista ends his career as a Jay.

Well that is a huge difference.

Probably in the 700s range. If it's any lower than that, I doubt management picks up the option. If his OPS is 800 or higher, he's likely electing free agency.
