When he signed the contract, we all knew the back end of his deal wouldn't be pretty.

He hit under .200 until mid june last year then ripped the cover off the ball for nearly 3 months. Outside of Morales and Donaldson nobody has an OBP over .300 right now. No point singling out Russ.

This team is terrible in April/May , always has been.

Unfortunately, digging a hole early is not a positive, and the year is going to come - possibly this year - when they dig one deep enough they can't get out of.

Could be but it's still early to throw everyone under the bus. If we still have one win by the trade deadline then yeah let's rebuild or something. 4-5 months ago we were in the playoffs, we lose Edwin and a few bullpen pitchers and suddenly all of our players are too old and turning grey.

Our hitters were too old a year ago too, heh; Martin posted his worst wRC+ in four years, Bautista his worst since 2009, and Tulo the worst since he was a rookie. They will all hit better than they have, and the pitching staff might be good enough to hold it together, but a continued decline is a definite possibility.

We need moar steroids.

I'm 100% sure there's no way all those "clean" Yankee and Red Sox greats who were productive into their late 30s were not on something. Even Jeter.

Evidence is mounting that almost no one in the league was clean. There's a massive change in hitter aging curves since the end of the steroid era. Or the amphetamine era...it's likely that has had a more profound effect than the juicing.

Making 20 M this year, and 20 M for the next two seasons. Will be hard to move that contract.

If Martin puts up another 1.5 WAR season this year then it wont be hard to move him we retained some money in the off-season IF the Jays wanted to go that way.

McCann was coming off a 0.9 WAR season and had 2 more years left a 17M each and McCann was never as good as Martin - McCann averaged 3.7 WAR over 600PAs vs Martin's 4.5. Yankees retained 5.5M per making McCann a 11.5M player per season.

In a dead market where Wieters cut his hand and signed in Feb he still got 10.5M per for 2 seasons. It might seem tough now seeing where Martin is but if he can put up 1.5 WAR season (believe it or not Martin had worse numbers last year and still put up 1.7 WAR) and the Jays retained then i am sure they would be able to trade Martin with 2 years remaining at say 12-15M.

In terms of WAR, he's already earned more than half of his total 5 year salary through the first two seasons, and that doesn't even include the value added by his framing and game-calling. Hard to think he had nothing to do with Liriano's resurgence, and obviously the entire pitching staff outside of Stroman far outperformed expectations last year. And last year he started off even worse than this, basically having the worst month in the history of baseball in April, while managing possibly the best 3 month span ever for a Jays catcher from June through the end of August (144 wRC+).

So no, Martin will probably not be worth his salary over the next couple years, but he was never expected to be. As with all long FA contracts, the surplus value from the first half balances out the overpriced back half. If he could use the same voodoo he used last summer, that'd be really nice. Watching him swing through two centre-cut fastballs with the bases loaded last night was painful.

If we head for .500 or worse we need a playoff team's catcher to get injured so we can move him.

If he's hitting .200, the Jays would have to eat 90% of his contract.

I have updated this thread title so that we may all take part in the occasional rejoicing that comes with Russell Martin making contact with a baseball.

Russ Martin Hitz Factz! Entering today, 10 of the 15 NL pitching staffs (staves?) had more hits than Martin; seven individual pitchers have also reached the multiple hit milestone.

What about Ortiz last year? That has to be considered very suspicious.

Might be. Some guys also just age better, and Ortiz -- who didn't have the quickest swing, but had exceptional bat control and a great eye -- could be counted in that category.
