Just as well to include Vernon Wells in the thread title.
Honourable mention to Jose Cruz Jr. I remember the commentators used to talk about this guy like he was the #1 prospect in baseball.

Everyone on the '93 roster should be exempt from this discussion

Vernon Wells had a better wRC+ in his final season in Toronto, the one right before we pulled off the miracle trade to dump his contract, than Joe Carter ever had once in his entire career. Wells also spent at least 4 seasons as an above-average CF as opposed to Carter who was a mediocre corner OF/1B/DH most of his Blue Jay career. Carter easily wins the title of most over-rated. He was the last one to make contact with the ball in both our WS titles though, and that obviously is pretty memorable. But the RBI totals caused many fans to think he was a lot better than he actually was.

Vernon Wells is my guy. He wouldn't win any gold gloves playing in today's era but was given a bunch due to an undeserved rep. He was a decent hitter in his best seasons but never elite. Perkins and the other writers loved the guy and helped prop him up to a level with fans he didn't deserve. I remember that JP could have traded him to the Dodgers for Matt Kemp and Chad Billingsley while they were both prospects and instead gave him that massive extension that was going to be impossible to live up too.

He was still better than Joe Carter. And statistically, Vernon was above average defensively from 2004-2007.

It's almost become fact that Carter was grossly overrated. That one is too easy.

I'd say Ed Sprague, but does anyone rate Ed Sprague highly?

Blasphemy. The guy hit a home run to win us the World Series. He's exempt from all criticism.

i'd add our World Series catchers to that list.
Borders and Tabby were meh, with Tabler having those clutch hits to propel him to average status.
question, though: was Gruber a very good 3B?

And Borders won us that game 3 in the Atlanta WS with a 2 run shot. I remember, I was at that game!
Didn't Gruber win an MVP?

There are still people who pay money to see Vanilla Ice in concert, so I suppose it's possible.

Joe Carter would have been lost in history if it weren't for him being in the right place at the right time
