2 for $28M is solid value. I would do that.

Guessing it'll be something like 2 years, $28-30m, with the second year featuring a buyout for $2m or some such. Thus, basically 1 year and $16m plus a $12-14m option.

Estrada seems to have found the strike zone again. I saw him live vs Boston at the end of June and he was throwing two balls for every strike.

Honestly, this is a decent signing if it happens. Someone needs to pitch every five days.

1 year and maybe an option? Sounds like he's trade-bait next season. A nice chip to hold.

Not if he gets worried again about being moved like this yyear trade deadline and pitches like crap, it's crazy, how well he pitched after the deadline.

I mean, he hasn't been great after the deadline. Mostly, he has been fortunate that the HRs have come at opportune times: he has surrendered 10 of them in his 55.1 IP since Aug 1st, but only 14 runs have scored. Part of that is that he scatters baserunners, a larger part is sheer dumb luck.

Indeed, but given the paucity of starting pitching options on the FA market this winter and in the farm system for the start of next season, I'm okay with this. At least they haven't gone out and given him a three year deal.

Signing your own free agent means you don't give up a draft pick, right?

Funny, when they acquired Estrada I thought it was a terrible signing, yet he's turned into one of my favourite players on the team. He's been dynamite in the playoffs and seems like a stand-up guy. Aside from June/July of this year, there's really not much to complain about his performance. For that money I almost wish they brought him back for two years instead of one - hopefully there's a team option for a second year.

You only lose a draft pick if you sign a player that rejected a qualifying offer. Estrada can't be given a qualifying offer again, and even if he was eligible, he wouldn't get one because he's not worth that much.

My point is that if the Jays signed someone else's free agent pitcher as a replacement for Estrada, who is relatively equal to Estrada - then the Jays could potentially give up a draft pick. So they get a starting pitcher for 2018 and hold on to a pick.

My point is that if the Jays signed someone else's free agent pitcher as a replacement for Estrada, who is relatively equal to Estrada - then the Jays could potentially give up a draft pick. So they get a starting pitcher for 2018 and hold on to a pick.

If we sign another pitcher that has already turned down a $20M qualifying offer, then yes, we would have to give up a pick. A pitcher that turned down $20M wouldn't be signing a one year contract for $13M, though, so I don't see how this is even loosely related.

Yeah not sure how this is related. IF the Jays Signed someone who qualified for it like Yu Darvish like type Pitcher (Who won't be subjected to compensation picks anyways, since he was traded midseason). But let's say a pitcher like that, he would go for far more terms/contract than 13 to 15 mill range.

Any Pitcher who they Jays would have signed to 15 mill range, wouldn't have been associated with the compensation pick. Also on top of that, if the Jays have one of the Top 10 worst records in baseball this year (Currently they are 11th or 12th worse), they won't have to give up a draft pick no matter who they sign. Sucks now the games don't mean anything we have won 7 of our last 10 games, and went from like 9th worse to 12th worse.

The pitching staff and Donaldson are too good to lose as much as some would like.

I think this is a great signing.
Gives us abit of hope for next year (if everything goes well). But doesn't cripple long term and farm still in place. What more can you ask
