A young starter with mid rotation potential could probably be had for JD at the deadline, too. In that scenario, you could at least see how 2018 played out before doing anything. Teams in the 82-85 win range can always overachieve with some luck, good health, etc. Just like they can badly under perform (2017). With the 2nd wild card and no team aside from the Angels really doing anything yet, it's too early to punt the entire season for a less than suitable return. If the Cardinals want to give up their best prospects, and more than one of them, then you reconsider that stance, but again, you have to be realistic about what type of return you will be able to get. Plus, Shapiro has to deal with an ownership group that would need to be sold on a JD trade, so it has to meet some type of short and long term criteria, which makes that type of deal a lot more difficult to pull off. Unless the Cardinals want to do something like Pham, Gyorko, and one of their young mid tier pitching prospects (Hudson, Helsley), and they probably wouldn't.
Also, if you look at the way the roster is set up, the Jays are going to rebuild in 2019 anyway, or at least begin a transition phase. Might as well go for it when the 2nd wild card is attainable, and then see if they can build their next competitive window by the time Dombrowski has effectively killed off the Red Sox (2021 or so).

Listen, I am a Raptors' hardcore fan, and a season ticket holder - even if I sell of most of the regular season. If the best the Raptors were likely to do this season is play .500, perhaps good enough for the eighth and final playoff spot, or not, then get swept out by the Cavs in the first round, and if one of our best assets was likely to bolt in free agency in a year's time (and it made no sense to sign for a market extension at his age), I'd be all for a rebuild. The sooner you start it, the sooner you contend again, and you don't want to lose the asset value of that star player. We saw Chris Bosh walk, and it just stretched out the misery.

2021 is an optimistic timeline even if we move now. If we instead lose Donaldson and Happ in free agency, and potentially see the trade value of Smoak/Osuna tail off, it becomes a highly improbable timeline. We have little pitching depth in the minors, and we have no starters who are under team control past 2020. That's why acquiring "mid-rotation" starters (and Flaherty, as an example, could be more than that given the improvement in his stuff) who we'd control through 2025 or thereabouts is going to be crucial if we're to turn it around. You can't build a rotation in free agency. Pitchers cost too much.
**** your asterisk.

The Orioles just got added incentive to deal Machado - Zack Britton is out for the 2018 season with a ruptured achilles, suffered during a workout.

The Toronto Blue Jays paid the Detroit a Huge price for a short playoff run with David Price. Daniel Norris was an Elite ranked prospect plus they got more.
So why do people think 1 full year of Josh Donaldson, with a whole year to Negotiate an extension is not worth much? He is willing to extend unlike say Machado, so it’s not a total rental too.
Jays should demand the world and someone might bite. Worse players have gotten better packages just in recent times. JD is a superstar and no one can deny that.

Re: Orioles listening on Machado, why not Donaldson?
With no sufficient bid emerging, the Orioles are now indicating to interested organizations that star third baseman Manny Machado “is staying put,” according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (Twitter links). That could yet change if a big new offer comes in the door, but it seems that Baltimore will no longer actively shop the pending free agent.
it looks like Machado is off the table...

Read a poll asking jay fans if they wanted to keep JD or cash in on him. 77% said trade him. I’m sure the people participating are the more educated part of the fan base but still a pretty surprising result.
