Grichuk was Arb 1 this winter, gets $2.8m in 2018, and is probably on a faster salary increase track than Leone, also arb 1, and obviously Greene, who will be entry level if he makes it. St. Louis has a fairly large payroll and is still angling for big fish in free agency, so avoiding an Arb 2 situation where Grichuk blows up is something the Cards may have wanted to avoid.

Grichuk feels to me like Colby Rasmus redux - a decent gamble. But as for starting pitching depth in the minors, that takes a hit, and the bullpen has to be a little thinner. Leone did nicely for the Jays.

Yeah, I really don't like Grichuk. One of the worst hackers in the league.

From a results standpoint they're remarkably similar save the bit where Grichuk isn't a plus CF defender.

Grichuk can play all OF positions, but seems to play more RF and CF. Potentially allows the Jays to trade PIllar when Alford or Hernandez move up. Lets both start 2018 in Buffalo.

Leone is a definite loss. Greene wasn't exactly killing it at AA, despite being the Jays #11 prospect.

Greene may make for a lights-out reliever in short order, however. Throws 100+ and has a nasty changeup.

Grichuk has decent power, however we now have 3 starting outfielders who are all low batting average hitters.

just starting to like our 7, 8, and 9 inning situation...leone, tepera, and barnes were our positives last season, and really covered the 6, 7, and 8 great

but the guys upstairs think we have enough arms we gotta trust them

Agreed, and he might have been a candidate to get to the majors as a reliever as early as this summer. That said, with Leone gone, the pen is further thinned. I don't see a bullpen anchored by Osuna (emotionally shaky), Danny Barnes, Ryan Tepera, Aaron Loup and a few guys who spent most of last season in the minors as much of a ticket to a wildcard berth. So there must be more here, either an FA or another trade. And Biagini starts.

Seriously, is that a contender's bullpen?

Trade that doesn’t move the needle, loses one of our top relievers from last year and compromises rotation depth, sounds great!

On the plus, Grichuk is still only 25 so there’s time for him to continue. Low BA but did have 50 extra base hits last year, my guess is a platoon with Granderson in LF and that means someone else is on the move, like Zeke or Pillar or Pearce. Guessing there’s gotta be another move.

Not only low BA, but Grichuk's OBP is around Kevin Pillar territory.
