Not bad for an innings-eating fifth starter, but there's a higher than I'd like chance that he'll be eaten alive in the AL East. Decent insurance in case Sanchez can't go. In the meantime this means this means Biagini to AAA or the bullpen.

Stroman
Sanchez
Happ
Estrada
Garcia
Pretty solid rotation.

Logical move; didn't have much left to spend on a starter, and Garcia's good value at that price.

Exactly the starter I wanted them to sign. Not many good options in free agency, but Garcia looked like the most cost effective ~2 war starter out there. The 2019 option is important since the Jays need some arms beyond 2018.

Would say that Garcia doesn't really qualify as an "innings eater", though. He's generally better than that, but gets injured with such frequency that he last exceeded 30 starts in 2011. His perihperals have been getting progressively worse, but that's part of the bargain...he wouldn't be available cheaply if not for the red flags, and his aren't Cashner-esque (how Cashner got more guaranteed money is beyond me).
Solid buy-low that also serves as a good two-way play however; if Garcia pitches well, that team option makes him attractive trade bait.

Garcia is an above average pitcher... when healthy. However, odds are he'll be injured at some point this season for an extended time.

well of all the 1 year starter options cashner, dickey, hellickson, lackey, liriano, nolasco, tillman, vargas, and garcia
he was maybe the best option, but not by much, hes up against a lot of scrubs
not really excited about any of the 1 year options, but this is a jays move through and through

I think we were in on Cashner (which i would have preferred.) but once he signed with the Orioles they jumped on Garcia for 1 year with a team option at 10 million and 2 million buyout. Our rotation looks set. Biagini either goes to the bullpen as a reliever or starts in AAA as a starter.

I would much rather have gone for Chatwood for 3/39 than Garcia at 1/10 (or 2/18 if his option is picked up). We need starters beyond this year, we could have afforded him, and he's likely to be better than Garcia. That said, probably would have cost more to get Chatwood to Toronto.

I think this fits better with our rebuilding timeline. You lose Happ and Estrada after this season regardless, and if Donaldson goes, too, there isn't much sense hanging on to Garcia. Just let the chips fall, run off more salary, start folding in rookies like Zeutch and Borucki, and position rookies Alford and Jansen. At a certain point in time, overdue in my opinion, you face up to what you have and where you're at, and get on with the obvious.

Really like this signing especially as a 5th starter

I used to really like Garcia a couple years ago. Now.... meh. We'll see. He at least appears to be healthy for once. 59 starts over the past 2 years!! Who would have guessed that?! He had serious trouble with walks last year, though. Often a precursor to elbow issues, and it's been 10 years since his TJ surgery. It's risky.

Quick someone tell us how much we have left to spend on FA this season after this signing. We need another SP or Reliever. Backup catcher would be nice too. Not sure who's out there that would be a good fit.

Very little; we're above $160m. Like, maybe $5m, though we'll be budgeting in the possibility of someone like Breslow making the team, as his deal is for above minimum, plus the various incentives attached. Unless our budget is above what was mooted, I wouldn't expect anyone significant.

Good signing for a 5th starter. One year commitment, so if things do not work out, you are not looking at a long term-deal. Glad that Biagini will now be back in the bullpen.

I still don't see any figure assigned to Diaz.
