April 30-May2: Week of the Living Dead. Jays at Twins

Post#1 » by dagger » Mon Apr 30, 2018 2:38 am

Six games in the next five? Eight in the next seven? If Discovery Channel had a Death March Week, we'd be a featured attraction.

Ugly tidings.

First, a visit to Minnesota:

Monday, April 30
Aaron Sanchez (1-2, 3.69 ERA) vs Lance Lynn (0-2, 7.71 ERA)

Tuesday, May 1
Marco Estrada (2-2. 6.00 ERA) vs Kyle Gibson (1-1, 3.33 ERA)

Wednesday, May 2
Marcus Stroman (0-3, 8.88 ERA) vs Phil Hughes (0-0, 7.71 ERA)

Then on to Cleveland for a makeup doubleheader, and then Tampa Bay for the weekend. Love those frequent flyer points.

Looking at those names it would have been hard to imagine prior to the season, but we may have the inferior starter going in all 3 matchups. Sanchez and Stroman have been trash, and though I expect Estrada to pick things up a bit, 2018 Kyle Gibson is actually pretty good. The fact that Stroman vs Hughes is even a discussion is a scary thought. I mean, even without the ability to throw a strike, Stro should have the edge there... but it just doesn't feel comfortable.

Stroman has been awful, especially his walk rate. He never had a high walk rate throughout his professional career. Is there something wrong? ...Hoping it is just small sample size.

Considering the tough schedule, the key injuries and the disappointing SP, 15-12 is an excellent start.

Masai is overrated.
I dont get how so many people believe in the raptors, they have zero to chance to win it all.

Their schedule has actually been pretty easy so far, and they've had a lot of winneryness to boot. But yeah, with the key injuries are significant underperformance of key personnel (Stroman, Estrada, Martin, Travis, Diaz, Grichuk, etc) a winning record is somewhat surprising.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

So long do we wait until we give Stroman the Devon Travis treatment and send him down for a bit so he can play catch up after missing spring training.

Stroman will get it together at some point. I think. Estrada and Sanchez, I dunno...I think that Estrada is going to ultimately look a lot like the 2017 iteration, and Sanchez looks like the guy we were pretty sure was a future reliever. Happ needs to be cocooned in bubble wrap on his off-days, because he's the only sure thing we have at the moment.

But do you re-sign Happ at his age? He'll be 36 in October.

For more than a year + option or something? No. Unfortunately, at his age, he's probably not getting the $50m guarantee that would get us a comp pick either.

Someone should tell Russell Martin tomorrow is May 1 and it's okay to start looking like you might make it over the Mendoza line by the all-star break.

Diaz, Martin, Morales, Grichuk, Travis... one lineup can only have so many sub Mendoza line hitters.

Lance Lynn isn't quite building up to a big free agent contract after taking that one-year deal.
