I'll change the title if this pans out as true. Obviously would be a big blow to the Mariners.

umm.. Furosemide is a water pill used for blood pressure control. It’s not a PED, an addictive substance, a narcotic, or anything. It just makes you pee more, lowers the fluids in your body and puts you at lower risk of a heart attack.

Millions of Canadians are on this and it’s a common prescription

Heh, that's some unfortunate timing. The suspension cannot run concurrent with his time on the DL, so that means he has six weeks or more out, followed by 80 games out.

Why is it banned?
Perhaps obviously, furosemide can be used as a masking agent, helping the body rid itself of evidence of doping through urination. Hence why it, among other diuretics, is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Does it have anything to do with appealing vs not appealing? If he doesn't appeal can he start serving it.

It's entirely possible that he was given the drug for a totally legitimate reason. The thing is, though, that it's incumbent upon the players and their agents to know these things. If it was prescribed by an above-board doctor, and Cano asked him whether this medication might run afoul of the league's drug testing, the answer would have been a definitive "well, yeah, it's a diuretic". At which point you seek a therapeutic use exemption.

MLB can only suspend him if it can prove that he used it as a masking agent. I wonder how MLB was able to prove that?

I believe the onus is on the player to prove it was used for a legitimate purpose. Dan Haren tweeted about this today, and said he needed to change blood pressure meds to avoid testing positive since he was tired of going through the paperwork of getting doctors notes for it.

Talk about albatross contracts. $120M left on his deal after this year.

The Marines had better hope the roids weren't responsible for his performance.

He claims that a doctor from the Dominican prescribed it to him for an (undisclosed) ailment. Imagine that, a guy who signed a $240 million contract needs to go to the world renowned doctors in the D.R. to get treatment. Yeah, OK.

Cano had been an obvious suspect for a while now.

He doesn't fall in the category of patients for which it would be indicated. If he did, it's unlikely he'd be participating in high level athletics.

Furosemide, as mentioned by others, is generally indicated in cases of liver cirrhosis with resultant ascites (fluid buildup in the abdomen), pulmonary edema (fluid buildup in the lungs), peripheral edema (fluid buildup in the legs), and a few other instances that would very likely effect his quality of life.

Furosemide has a short half-life, approximately 1 hour. It's use, along with other diuretics, is as a masking agent, since it quickly removes fluid buildup in the extravascular space. The result when using it with steroids is to dilute the urine to the point where the steroid or other PED is barely detectable. That he used furosemide suggests he was either very recently using or was actively using when tested.

The main method for detection is either by testing serum levels, since approximately 90% of it binds to proteins in your blood. But it is also detected in the urine by a combination of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry.

Using furosemide, however, has clinically detectable negative effects on athletic performance, most notably decreasing your VO2max, which would make it unwise to continue taking it unless you absolutely need to. Most likely, again, if you're trying to mask a steroid. Since it's a highly active diuretic with immediate results, it can have significant effect on your kidneys due to the potential for dehydration.

Based on what i've read, unless there is medical indication for diuretic usage by an athlete, there is a blanket ban on their use by doping agencies.

He’s one of many. The PED testing for all sports is archaic. There are so many masking agents to that can be used that MLB doesn’t even know about nor do they really want to know because they don’t need that stain on the sport. Cano was just sloppy and lazy and it cost him much like Ben Johnson back in the day when he was taking PEDs like a thoroughbred and only got caught because he screwed up his doses.

You know which players are taking PEDs. The ones that look like they’re taking it. You can’t be jacked like that playing every day and eating out of hotels. There’s too much money involved in sports for players not to do it. If you know that taking PEDs will get you a massive contract eventually, it’s pretty hard to resist.

That doesn't make any sense. There are plenty of people jacked like that who work eight hours a day or more at a normal job. Why would it be harder to maintain muscle mass when your actual job involves allotted time to lift weights under the supervision of a professional trainer? Or eating at hotels when the meals are generally catered, with the menu set by dietitians?

Yeah, I don't doubt PEDs are widely used across all sports, but to suggest that you can tell who is and isn't using based on how they look is pretty ridiculous.
