Hanley Ramirez DFA'd

Title says it all. He isn't pulling his weight and was taking up a roster spot, and presenting a distraction. So the Sox are eating his salary. This might cause someone at, oh Blue Jays Way, to ask the beancounters why a team in need of space for young players can't start feeding the dross to the sharks.

LOL. Hanley is basically performing at the level of Kendrys Morales' upside, and he gets DFA'd.

Interestingly, the guy that signed Hanley to that contract was hired to be our VP of Baseball Operations two months before we signed Morales.

Only positive for them is that Hanley on a shorter term than most of the aging sluggers signed in that time frame. It worked out terribly, but sadly for us it's off the books after this year.

That said, the Red Sox are now paying close to $45m this year to players who aren't on their roster: $15m or thereabouts in dead money for Hanley, $18m for Sandoval, and $11.8m for Rusney Castillo.

In total, the Red Sox will have paid him $88m for 1.2 fWAR of production. That's not good! Weirder still is that it's split between a 3 WAR season in 2016, and -1.8 WAR in his other two and a quarter seasons in Boston.

I wish our FO had the balls to make a move like this. With our season all but over, what is the point of wasting a roster spot on a negative WAR DH that can't turn a right-center ball off the wall into a double.

Make a move to a rotating DH and get another young player into the mix.

Wouldn't mind taking the chance on Ramirez. I'd rather much have him and watch him play than Molasses at DH.
