June 7-10 Baltimore Deplorables @ Toronto Unwatchables

Post#1 » by dagger » Thu Jun 7, 2018 3:30 am

This is a series between two birds verging on extinction

I have the idea for a Jays promotion. You know the movie genre where terrorists hijack a plane and threaten to kill a passenger every hour until their demands are met? I propose that after every home loss, the fans get to designate a player, coach or team broadcaster for assignment. And tonight's winner is....

June 7 7:07 pm
David Hess (2-2 3.47 ERA) vs Jaime Garcia (2-4, 6.08 ERA)

June 8 7:07 pm
Andrew Cashner (2-7, 5.02 ERA) vs Jay Happ (7-3, 4.08 ERA)

June 9 1:07 pm
Kevin Gausman (3-5, 4.63 ERA) vs Aaron Sanchez (3-5, 4:48 ERA)

June 10 1:07 pm
Alex Cobb (2-7, 6.19 ERA) vs Marco Estrada (2-6, 5.29 ERA)

I can see some fake wins in this series, but prolonging our slow and agonizing death. The Orioles are coming in on a 2 game winning streak. Can't remember the last time we had one of those.
I acknowledge and thank the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples of the Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations for allowing me to live, work and play on their unceded traditional territories.

Guys something has to give.. The stadium was empty against the Yankess with Judge and Stanton in town. I can only imagine what it will be like against the Orioles. What a mess this team and organization is in.

Actually, this is good. No more fake contender stuff, no signing of overpaid, geriatric free agents to paper over obvious gaps. Let the rebuild begin. The farm system is in good and getting better shape. There are lots of exciting kids in the pipeline who play an exciting brand of ball, not just winning, but rousing the crowds. I'd pay to see a bunch of youngsters with a future lose - I won't pay to see the old crocs. I mean four freaking hits in a 13 inning game? Let's just move away from this. For example, give Dwight Smith Jr an honest trial, not as an injury replacement but as an everyday player. Is he going to be any worse than Granderson? Smith Jr might not be our long term answer as one of our starting outfielders, maybe he's just a transitional piece for a year or two, but give him a clear shot. And there are others who will at least fit the culture of a rebuilding team much better than these old farts.

Agreed on the old cros comment and giving our younger players a chance. Need to shed some of these geriatrics soon.. Not fun at all watching this team right now. Aren't we like the oldest team in baseball?

Btw, impressed with Gaviglio's start last night. Would love for him to continue pitching well this season. It will only solidify himself as one of our starting pitchers for next season.

Granderson is the player you have picked out to criticize? Until the last couple of weeks, he was pretty good. High OBP. LH bat with some pop.
Morales should be the focus of any rant against veterans who provide little or no value whatsoever... release him as he has no positional value either. He's just taking a roster spot. Urshela is not a major league player, either
I would trade Pillar before his value tanks further (defence is already declining and his inevitable coming back to Earth with the bat has already happened)

A number of players got off the good starts, but we're now through two months of the season and performances have regressed to their likely mean. Granderson is an old cat, and whatever he was able to do in the past is unlikely to be sustained in the present. In my mind, I'd have every single member of this team up for trade or DFA. That doesn't mean they would all go at one time, but if there are buyers out there, let's move on. I don't like old vets blocking young talent. Maybe one can rationalize keeping Danny Jansen in Buffalo this season because Maile is playing over his head, but there isn't much talent on the rest of the roster that should deny opportunities to a Dwight Smith or a Lourdes Gouriel. These guys aren't 19 year olds, and they might or might not be the long-term answer, but they are bound to improve with regular major league time, rather than as emergency callups. And they would be more fun to watch than there guys standing in their way.

Big series; we're currently the sixth-worst team in baseball, but a slip-up against the worst could see us plummet. We'll need to be truly appalling to lose at least two of these games.

That's fair and I definitely would prefer Gurriel getting playing time over Urshela.
It's too bad they made the trade for Grichuk because Smith could be used in his place for this season
Jansen needs to play every day, so there is logic behind him remaining in Buffalo. 1+ more year of Martin on the books...

Read on Twitter

I post that only to highlight that the Jays have resorted to promoting Luke Maile as the face of our offense.

Only 101 games of this **** to go.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

He has been our most valuable position player on the season, so I mean...

Nice to see Granderson hit one out. Keep boosting that trade value! You're only worth someone's 25th best prospect now, but a good month and that could be their 18th!

Baltimore is so bad that they make Jaime Garcia look good.

We're so bad that we're not beating them despite that.
