https://deadspin.com/report-former-all-star-pitcher-esteban-loaiza-expected-1828149955He was charged earlier in the year, and it doesn't appear that his money or fame has allowed him to plead to a lesser charge. I mean, it's somewhat difficult to plead down 44 lbs of cocaine to a misdemeanor or something, but in the sad history of Jays pitchers from the aughts, getting a decade or more for drug smuggling (after earning $40m+) is a new one.

That's crazy man That's got to be one of the all-time fallings in sport.
$40M earned and now spending 10 years in jail at the minimum is insane.

I saw this earlier too and I was like holy crap he was a Jay once upon a time. I'm honestly surprised he made that much money in his career. He seemed so mediocre too.

He had a couple really good years, which luckily for him, came after he had been in the league long enough to be a free agent. His 2003 season was unbelievably good, considering he was 31 and had a very uninspiring career to that point.

Not the first time the cartel has used rich people/celebrities as drug mules. They attract less attention from the authorities.
