This isnot a criticism of vladdy, but I'm genuinely curious as to why he is baseballs 1 prospect? Stroman likened him to zion Williamson. I know he's an amazing hitter, but for example a guy like trout is an amazing 5 tool player. He's good at every th ING... Vladdy is really just a hitter. What makes his potential so high?

Because elite power/contact/patience is exceptionally valuable. Trout is in a division unto himself, being perhaps the best player in MLB history.

But we’re not just talking hype with Vlad, Jr. The superstar-to-be turns just 20 years old on March 16th and Steamer already projects him to be the 13th best MLB hitter this season by wOBA (.374). In fact, Steamer projects just four MLB hitters to hit .300 or better in 2019, a list that not only includes Vlad, Jr. (.306 AVG), but also stations him at the very top, above MVP’s Jose Altuve, Mookie Betts, and then Daniel Murphy. He’s one of 21 players to be projected for an OBP of .370 or higher, and one of only 23 hitters projected to slug .500 or better. His projected .879 OPS is significantly higher than his father’s rookie debut (.833)

A look at the most optmistic projections to the pessimistic ones.

10-year results (ages 20-29)
Optimistic projection: 68.5 WAR
Comp: Eddie Mathews

Standard projection: 52.1 WAR
Comp: George Brett

Pessimistic projection: 35.8 WAR
Comp: Ryan Zimmerman

For context, Mathews' 68.3 WAR from ages 20-29 is a record for third basemen and ranks 12th among modern position players, according to FanGraphs. Brett's 50.7 WAR ranks third at the hot corner (also behind Ron Santo) and tied for 32nd overall.

If Guerrero moves off third and becomes an average first baseman instead, his standard projection would drop to 41.1 WAR during those years. That's still an elite number at the position, with Bagwell a rough equivalent. Relegation to designated hitter would lower that number a bit further.

Cabrera is the most obvious comparison. He's also a guy who has never really had any value beyond his bat: his career WAR from defense/baserunning is most decidedly negative. But he's also a surefire Hall of Famer who (despite aging pretty badly) is pretty close to the top 50 all-time. I mean, you'd take that.

What were Cabrera's expectations before making the majors?

HIgh. He was less refined than Vladdy at the same age, but he had a similar skillset and was considered to be a top prospect. The big difference is that his power came after reaching the bigs, whereas Vladdy's was evident in his final full year in the minors.

The Topps trading card company announced Monday that Guerrero’s first rookie card, made available the day after his debut Friday in Toronto, has broken a record for any card released through the company’s TOPPS NOW program by selling 19,396 copies within the one day of sales. That mark broke the previous one-day record of 17,323, set by Angels two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani last year.

An oft forgotten addendum to the tale is the July 2 trade of prospects Chase De Jong and Tim Locastro to the Los Angeles Dodgers for international bonus pool slots totalling $1,071,300, a swap completed nearly simultaneously with Guerrero’s $3.9 million agreement.

Anthopoulos kept pressing Ismael Cruz, the Blue Jays’ director of international scouting at the time, to get the price down, to no avail. And as July 2 approached, they worried that the Kansas City Royals might start making some headway, and there was chatter that the San Diego Padres had started sniffing around. As a result, internal discussions started on whether the massive investment, one that would come with stiff penalties, was worth it.

The Blue Jays didn’t have the money to go that route, but they were determined to land Guerrero and decided that if they had to pay roughly $1.6 million in tax and sit out two signing periods, they would. That’s how much they believed in the player.

“What we liked about the international market the way it was set up was that you had the opportunity in any given year to get the best player on the market,” explains Anthopoulos. “Granted there’s more risk and they’re further away, but we were prepared to sit out two periods (for Guerrero). We didn’t know that we could work out a deal (for more bonus pool slots), and we didn’t know what the ask was going to be. But we were going to try to get more bonus pool money to alleviate the penalty down to one, but we were prepared to be out two.”

Initially, the Dodgers asked for Danny Jansen, who was recovering from a broken left hand in 2015 after missing time in 2014 with a knee injury. That would have made it easy to flip him, a 16th-round draft pick with little minor-league track record, but he was a non-starter.

“We thought he had pretty big upside, so we were prepared to sit out the second year rather than give up Danny Jansen,” says Anthopoulos. “Great job by L.A. for identifying Jansen in 2015. Ultimately, we said what if we give you two instead of one, and then we worked on the two.”

Enter De Jong, a second-round pick in 2012 pitching well at low-A Lansing at the time, and Locastro, a 13th-round pick in 2013 with lots of speed and the ability to play around the diamond who was also at Lansing. The pair would get the deal done for the bonus slots but internal debate on whether to use minor-league assets to ease a penalty continued.

Never heard of Topps NOW. Seems they used a photo from his debut for the card which is pretty cool, because that definitely looks like Vladdy when he hit the double down the right field line on Friday. And I might be one of those blurry figures in the background because that's right about where I was sitting. Neat.

You are correct, it is from his debut.

“We’ve got a set deal, he needs to get a day off,” Charlie Montoyo said before a 12-2 pummelling from the Red Sox. “Everybody is going to get a day off, anyway, 16 straight days, so today was Vlad’s.”

That’s weak and, despite his protestations that it was a collective coaching decision, it’s not on Montoyo, as there’s no way a baseball man with his experience and feel would make this call. The Blue Jays have delved into sports science as aggressively as anyone in baseball since Mark Shapiro took over as president and CEO after the 2015 season, and sitting Guerrero because it’s his day sounds far more like a high-performance department thing.

Unlike Leonard, Guerrero isn’t coming off a major injury, although his spring was truncated by an oblique strain. His initial progression was deliberate as a result of that. At this point though, the he’s-still-in-spring-training argument doesn’t really hold any water. The dude is only 20 and has been training a long time for this marathon, even if he was in on the team’s message post-game.

“I think so, especially because I just got hurt in spring training. So we’re just being careful with that,” Guerrero, in comments interpreted by Hector Lebron, replied when asked if scheduled days of were necessary.

“We have a plan for me to be healthy,” he added later, “and we’re just going to continue with that.”

Now, an important caveat is that teams have vastly more information about a player’s health than the general public does, so perhaps there’s a better reason than it’s his turn for why Guerrero sat Monday.
