Longer story is up now:

https://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-set-hire-charlie-montoyo-manager/

TORONTO – Impressed by the way the Tampa Bay Rays use data in their decision-making on and off the field, the Toronto Blue Jays are set to hire Charlie Montoyo away from their American League East rivals to be their new manager according to an industry source.

The decision, perhaps the most important made in Ross Atkins’ three years as GM thus far, comes on the same day Rocco Baldelli, another finalist from the analytically advanced club, was hired by the Minnesota Twins to replace the fired Paul Molitor.

David Bell, hired Sunday by the Cincinnati Reds Chicago Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde, and Houston Astros bench coach Joe Espada were the other known finalists for the Blue Jays’ vacancy.

Montoyo, a 53-year-old from Florida, Puerto Rico who was in Toronto on Tuesday for an in-person interview, takes over from the departed John Gibbons and will give a rebuilding Blue Jays team a new and much different leader.

He also gives them a bilingual voice at the helm at a time when young Latino players like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Lourdes Gurriel Jr., are on the verge of becoming key parts of the franchise.

It's difficult to say whether managerial hires, particularly first-time ones, are any good. He checks the boxes, though; it's clear that we want to be a more analytically-driven team, and we will likely need to be to compete in this division.

Here's an interesting aspect of this: Charlie was a mentor in the 1990s for Vlad Sr. Was his translator among other things when Dad was playing for AA Harrisburg in the Expos system. So he presumably has the family's confidence.

He speaks Spanish, and also better English than Gibbons.

I don't know much about him, but if he buys into analytics and is bi-lingual those are definite positive attributes.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

It means evidence based decision making.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

Like sitting 4 of your top HR hitters in game 2 of the World Series? There has to be a happy medium.

You can disagree with the evidence they're using and suggest they should use other/more evidence instead. That isn't wrong. The whole idea about analytics is to actually use evidence rather than ignore it for a gut feeling or gross oversimplification of the evidence just because it's easier.

I like this hire. I have no idea if it will work out but it sure seems like the Jays picked a guy who put in his time, has succeeded at everything he's done, is open-minded and flexible, and fits the direction the team is trying to move in. And it wasn't even one of those internal/former Cleveland guys like some were worried about. Overall I don't really see anything to be unhappy about.

Everyone saying this is an excellent hire.

1) Has several years of experience as a manager in the minors
2) great teacher + great at player development (both will be pivotal the next 5 years)
3) Bilingual
4) High character
5) Comes from a great organization that is advanced and always ahead of the curve in order to gain an advantage (something we never had)
