Interesting that the Jays reached out to him. Goes to show if you have a passion for something, and keep going through with it, eventually someone in big position will see it.

He always seemed like a guy that was more interested in writing eccentric, whimsy prose that just happened to be about baseball since that's what his friends were interested in; about the words, more than the content. This author is surprised and gladdened at the turn of events that have befallen Mr. Cistulli after his tenure at Fangraphs dot com.

My scouting report on Cistulli pegged him as the least likely Fangraphs writer to end up with a major league team, but I quite like the hire. Would imagine his role is to be something of an outside-the-box ideas person; he's well-versed in SABR stuff without being an "the algorithm wills it" sort, and there's no questioning his intelligence. Useful sort to have in an analytical department.

You're a writer?
(Or are you parodying the ridiculous "this author" turn of phrase writers use? If so, this reader is laughing out loud.)

Never mind. You're obviously joking, as I just read Cistulli for the first time and he really does write like a friendless virgin. Couldn't get through the whole article. Worse than Stoeten.

I authored that post. But yes, it was parody. If you've read much of anything from Carson Cistulli it'd be pretty obvious.

Yeah. It's a bit much. A trend within the baseball writing community. As much as I love the work from guys like Ben Lindbergh and Jeff Sullivan, listening to their podcast is like hearing two robots talk to each other. I wish I could get past superficial things like these, but it can be hard.
As far as baseball analysis, Cistulli's quirkiness kinda manifests itself into a good eye for things that most people overlook. I remember him touting Jose Ramirez a few years back and just kind of being laughed at by Dave Cameron. And his Fringe 5 stuff is interesting. It's good to have people with different perspectives, and the fact that the Jays FO is making a point of looking at hiring from Fangraphs is a good sign, IMO. Although, the aforementioned Dave Cameron was hired by the Padres almost immediately before they signed Eric Hosmer, about whom Cameron had recently written a detailed article about how Hosmer would be the biggest landmine contract of the off-season. Which was hilarious. And, as it turns out, accurate.
