Both good deals for the Braves. McCann at 2M is solid.

Great deal for JD if you look at his situation today (not as a whole when he was offered 75M-90M in spring training) - never thought he would get anything close to 23M so good for both sides.

Braves don't get a comp pick next year, right?

They can if they qualify him and he rejects and he signs elsewhere.

Risky move for JD. Higher salary this year, but I'd think a larger dollar with lower AAV was on the table somewhere.

It's possible but unlikely that Donaldson will get a contract sufficient to qualify for a comp pick; it'd need to be $50m+ for his ages 34-35 (or 36) season, and those deals are hard to come by unless he posts a monster season.

Life's tough for guys who reach the majors at a later age. If you follow a normal aging curve, you're never going to get that monster deal. And if your team has such a player, don't be in a rush to sign them to an extension that buys out free agent seasons.

I didnt think there was a limit;

If the team was not a revenue sharing recipient or the free agent signed for less than $50MM guaranteed, the team will receive a compensatory pick after Competitive Balance Round B, which takes place just prior to the draft’s third round. (The Competitive Balance process itself underwent some changes in the new CBA.) This is essentially the “default” compensation for teams losing QO free agents, since most teams won’t meet either of the following two sets of criteria.

AA sticking it to the Jays, while Shapiro and Atkins keep running the Jays into mediocrity

How so? The Jays didn't want Donaldson at anything approaching 1/23 million.
You know that is why they traded him, right? I think the qualifying offer would have been lower than the deal he got from Atlanta...

AA helped run this team into the ground, but no, let's only blame the current regime.

QO would have been $17.9M, and Donaldson likely would have accepted it since if he declined, any potential suitors would have had to forfeit a pick to sign him. The Braves would have lost their 2nd pick in the draft plus $500K in international bonus money. I don't know if that int'l pool money is as valuable to them as it would be to other teams since they have spending restrictions for the next couple years due to cheating the system. But still, Donaldson would have been very likely to accept $17.9M to avoid testing the market with extra costs for any team that signed him.

So, yeah... the Jays didn't want Donaldson this year. I don't see how it's AA sticking it to them. It doesn't affect the Jays at all.

mediocre or cleaning up the mess that AA left?

i mean if the Jays are rebuilding - i expect mediocrity or less - doesn't matter who is captain of the ship. there was no way the players that AA picked up/signed would have lived up to their contracts and now the Jays are paying for it.

you're right, they mishandled some assets probably but to be honest, they wanted to sell tickets - injuries got in the way etc etc.

clean house and try again. sports are cyclical monsters

Problem is it will be years, if ever, before they are competitive again in this division now the Sox and Yankees are back on track

Yankees maybe, but the Massholes' window won't be open for too long... they used a lot of prospect capital acquiring Sale and Kimbrel and they are already trying to dump salary this offseason. Add the fact that Betts and others will be free agents soon and they are not as well positioned past next season as the the Yankees
