Gurriel. I'm dubious that he's a long-term option, but there's no reason not to give him that shot, and at some point from mid 2019 to early 2020 the job will likely belong to Bichette.

The man who signed Tulo to his contract, Dan O'Dowd, reacts to the Jays dumping him today on MLB Network:

And with Smith possibly giving Bichette, Gurriel, etc a run before long. It's just no place for old men.

Re: Blue Jays release Troy Tulowitzki
It’s kinda unfortunate what happened. Tulo was on a HOF path when the Jays traded for him and the bottom just fell out on both his production and his health. The trade ultimately didn’t work out but who knows where the Jays would have ended up with a Goins/Barney middle infield. Out of the playoffs?
I do like how as all these terrible contracts blow up in the face of Shapiro and company that AA is sitting down in Atlanta with a young team and a clean slate. Very, very smart series of career moves on his part.

The Jays have a long chain of SSs they'll want to give a shot to. Gurriel is first in line and Bichette is next. Give those guys a couple seasons to see what they have. After them, you mentioned Smith but there are also guys like Warmoth, Groshans, Espinal, Martinez, Jiminez, etc. Some of those guys won't pan out (I'm not a big believer in Warmoth), some are a ways from the majors yet, and others will move off of short as they continue developing but that's a crowded group waiting behind Bichette. Gurriel and Bichette getting opportunities for a season or two is certainly workable and some of those other guys will be ready if things haven't worked out by that point.

Alex Anthopoulos surprised Blue Jays released Troy Tulowitzki - Sportsnet.ca
“Definitely a surprise,” Anthopoulos told Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae at the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas, where the Winter Meetings are taking place. “Obviously I haven’t been there for the past three years so it’s hard to know what’s been going on there.”
“I can only speak from my two months with him,” Anthopoulos said of Tulowitzki. “No errors, stabilizing our defence. Getting out of the Jose Reyes deal at the time was [also] pretty important for us."
“But I think he’ll land on his feet, just knowing him, he’s a complete pro, I won’t be surprised to see him bounce back, and hopefully things will work out for him.”

Re: Blue Jays release Troy Tulowitzki
I'm surprised there wasn't a market for Tulo for free. What i mean by that is, if Rogers/and blue jays were willing to eat the full 38 mill, and there appears to be 5-6 teams that are willing to sign him to 700k to 1 mill deal. Why couldn't the jays offer that in deal, we'll eat his full contract, you get him for 2 years for free for some sort of marginal prospect. Wouldn't that be better than nothing? Oh teams want him for free at the price of prospect? Though are willing to sign him even at marginal cheap cost.

Memo to AA: 2018 is not the New 2015, especially for a player now in his mid-30s. Tulo? Edwin? Jose? Russ Martin? The bell tolls for them all.

Tulo situation was infuriating for sure. I will vouch for bone spurs in heel. I got one last year and literally couldn’t walk let alone play baseball

I'll attempt to split the hair on this one. I think there is a diminishing market out there for Tulo. Like a 1-year 700k market. But there was ZERO competition. Teams perfectly happy to pass on him if there was any prospect attached. Let another team take that risk. No team wanted to be perceived to have over-payed with any sort of prospect. Also with your own scouting/player development departments. No one was going out on any limb for this turd.

Re: Blue Jays release Troy Tulowitzki
LONG BEACH, Calif. — By late Tuesday morning, a half-dozen or so teams had told or hinted to Troy Tulowitzki that he could be their next shortstop or third baseman or second baseman, the non-binding smiles and shoulder claps representing about half of those who showed up to watch the former All-Star and sudden free agent at Blair Field near Long Beach State.
After an hour-long workout, during which he fielded grounders only at shortstop and took a handful of batting practice rounds, all to a country music soundtrack, Tulowitzki himself shrugged and offered little beyond him being pleased to be healthy again and on a baseball field. By then, the sun had broken through a morning haze.

Re: Blue Jays release Troy Tulowitzki
Since being released by the Blue Jays last week — with two years and $38MM remaining on his contract — Tulowitzki has been separately connected to a handful of teams including the Pirates, the Yankees, the Cubs and the Giants. His agent, Paul Cohen, recently told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle that Tulowitzki is open to playing second base or third base with a new team. Brown, notably, writes that the biggest appeal for Tulowitzki will be the promise of regular at-bats at one positions

Good signing and fill in for the Yankees. Low risk, high reward.
Good spot for Tulo. Goes to a team and city he wanted to play for awhile and a serious contender.

Interesting opportunity for him. I'd expect he probably gets DFA'd by July, however. At least the Yankees are familiar with big-name shortstops with zero lateral movement.

Tulo to the Evil Empire. A match made in heaven...
