Report: 8 teams checking in on Harper - TSN.ca

While the Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, Washington Nationals and Chicago White Sox are seen as the four “active” suitors for free agent Bryce Harper, four other teams are still checking in on him according to Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports.

Heyman adds that it’s likely a few of the teams in contact with the Harper camp are looking at a shorter-term deal, which Harper is reportedly uninterested in. While his exact contract demands remain unknown, it is widely believed he is looking for something in the neighbourhood of Giancarlo Stanton’s 13-year, $325 million deal signed with the Miami Marlins in 2014.

Despite the way the market has unfolded this winter or the growing list of teams inquiring, the Phillies still remain confident they will land one of Harper or Manny Machado.
Phillies owner John Middleton said in November that the club was prepared to spend “stupid money” this off-season. So far, the club has brought in David Robertson, Andrew McCutchen and Jean Segura.

Harper knows he won't be a good player into his thirties so he wants all the money now. I bet he goes back to the Nats for 10 years and $240 mil. Machado will take a shorter deal.

Chances of Harper surpassing a $24M AAV are about 99.9999%. So, I wouldn't bet on that if I were you.

O...M...G.

Jays have done a lot of stupid things over the last few years, but I'm so glad they didn't delude themselves into thinking a 300M contract was a good idea. Why are teams still doing this to themselves? I wouldn't offer that deal to Babe Ruth.

iirc, San Diego has a huge TV deal. They also have the young talent to incrementally add and build around Machado. I guess I can see their logic.

Not that I agree with price tag, but San Deigo has the best farm team in the league. They already signed Eric Hosmer. Though curious they have Tatis coming up as SS, did Machado agree to play 3rd or vice versa.

Hopefully this will force padres to sped up the rebuild, and we can trade Stroman for package of youth.

The Hosmer and Myers deals are ugly but this team will have some fire power this season or next;

C: Mejia
1B: Hosmer
2B: Urias
SS: Tatis Jr.
3B: Machado
LF: Myers
CF: Margot
RF: Reyes

All under control for a minimum of 4 seasons.

Would have preferred to see him sign with the White Sox

They absolutely have a chance to be quite good in the next couple years. But man, they really need a pitching staff. and while they have a good crop of pitching prospects, they'll need a very good hit rate there, or they will need to open their wallets to an extent that has not typified their ownership over the past...well, ever really.

They have a tremendous prospect pipeline right now. The #2 prospect behind Guerrero is usually Fernando Tatis Jr, so the left side of the infield will be Machado and Tatis Jr, with Eric Hosmer at 1B. I wouldn't shock me if they traded some prospect talent for proven MLB talent now, and really make a run at the NL West.

In 2 of the last 3 seasons, Harper has put up 1.5 WAR or less, including last season when he put up 1.3 WAR in 550 PAs. Handing a ginormous decade-long contract to Harper would be borderline lunacy, IMO. Sure he had that monster MVP year in 2015, but that was 3 years ago and he's come nowhere close to that level of performance since.

Machada, I can somewhat understand. He has a better track record and play a more premium defensive position.

Looks like he’s agreed to 4/190 with Dodgers. Shorter term but yikes...

4 years, $190m? That can't be right. There's no way he's getting a nearly $50m AAV...right?

Maybe there are like “hit two grand slams in the World Series” bonuses in there or something.
