James Paxton returns to Mariners for $8.5M, 1-year deal - The Associated PressNEW YORK (AP) — Left-hander James Paxton is returning to the Seattle Mariners after an injury filled second season with the New York Yankees.
The 32-year-old left-hander and the Mariners agreed Saturday to an $8.5 million, one-year contract, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the agreement was subject to a successful physical.
Paxton can earn an additional $1.5 million in performance bonuses for starts: $150,000 each for six to 10 and $750,000 more over starts 11-22.
He earned $4,629,630 in prorated pay from a $12.5 million salary last year with New York.
That is a very reasonable low risk contract. Exactly the type of deal this front office likes. Good chance we are done spending.

OR, if that's the best deal he could muster, with the Mets (and everyone else) refusing to beat it,,,, then there's also a good chance that his medicals are truly rubbish.
Is anybody here a marine biologist?

Not sure why we didn't get Matt for that cheap contract. I think he's proven better (Though injury prone) than Matts/Stripling, etc.

It's astounding. And the incredible thing is that he's young enough that he could still get another contract after this deal, if he even vaguely lives up to it.

When that contract expires, I will be 49. Huh.
Still doesn't make me feel quite as old as the fact that the Padres are managed by a guy named Jayce Tingler, though.
**** your asterisk.
