I thought he just sucks, but he claims he has been denied promotions because of discrimination

Umpire Angel Hernandez calls it like he sees it — and now he’s ready to speak about racism within Major League Baseball.
After nearly two years keeping silent about his allegations of racial and ethnic discrimination in the Big Leagues, the controversial ump hopes to air his grievances as the 2019 season gets underway.
A document filed late Wednesday by Hernandez’s attorney in Manhattan Federal Court lists 27 points the oft-criticized umpire would like to address in a public forum. Fearing retaliation, he asks a judge to rule that MLB cannot fine or fire him for raising issues that are fair game, the papers show.
“MLB treats African Americans, Hispanics, Latinos and other people of color as competent to play the game based on their athletic ability, but MLB does not do nearly enough to promote African Americans, Hispanics, Latinos and other people of color to positions of leadership. MLB pays only lip service to preventing discrimination against African Americans, Hispanics, Latinos and other people of color," Hernandez attorney Kevin Murphy writes in the list.
“Many players, former players and other umpires who share Angel’s views keep silent or limit their comments because they fear retaliation from MLB.”

Isn’t he generally considered the worst, or one of the worst umpires in the league? And I don’t just mean subjectively with the players, managers and fans but also stAtistically?

I thought this story was at least a few years old?
And, yes, he’s an atrocious ump. And let’s his ego dictate how he treats players.

He discriminates against the strike zone.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

I don't think this will go well for him. He's a terrible umpire. Objectively terrible, not just in judgment, but in character, with his confrontational nature towards players and inability to remain impartial.
His accusations against Joe Torre, a minority, first generation Italian-American immigrant, may be racist. Libelous claims about him, and others, for personal gain.

Blocked from umping world series. It's good that hes not deciding important games like that.

When this first came up, I remember some fairly knowledgable writer-person suggesting that promotion from the minors/advancement within the majors did seem unfavourable to minority umpires.
That is unlikely to apply to Hernandez though, as his issue is that he is a terrible umpire.

**** your asterisk.

Joe Torre is not a minority—he is white. Joe Torre is not an immigrant—he was born in Brooklyn. Let's not forget that Angel Hernandez is also white (a white Cuban, of which there are a great many), and is playing the victim in order to fuel his narcissism (as I always say, if a narcissist doesn't swim in self-regard, they die—just like a shark).

He's a first/second-generation immigrant depending which definition you prefer. Both his parents were born in Italy. And he's Italian-American. That's a minority. Visible minority as well; the hairy arms make his heritage obvious. And yes I realize Angel Hernandez is an immigrant and a minority. Just as it's silly for me to say Joe Torre is a victim based on his ethnicity, the same can be said for Angel's claims. He is giving a bad name to actual cases of racial discrimination. The absurdity is intentional.
