Alek Manoah

School: West Virginia Year: Junior Position: RHP Age: 21 DOB: 01/09/1998 Bats: R Throws: R Height: 6'6" Weight: 260 lb. Previously drafted: Never

WATCH
Scouting grades: Fastball: 65 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 55

Manoah was a two-way player out of high school in the Miami area in 2016, but went undrafted and headed to West Virginia. The big right-hander worked more out of the bullpen than in the rotation over his first two seasons, but opened a lot of eyes as a starter in the Cape Cod League, leading the league in strikeouts. He's been that pitcher ever since, moving his way to close to the top of college arm options in this year's Draft.

A physical beast at 6-foot-6, 260-pounds, Manoah has always shown glimpses of solid power stuff, but without consistency or command of it. That's changed this spring as he has shown above-average control for most of his junior season. He's pitched with a fastball typically in the 94-97 mph range, missing a ton of bats thanks to good sink. His slider flashes plus at times and has been a more reliable weapon for him. He has a solid changeup, relying on it in the Cape Cod championship game, but he hasn't used it as much this spring.

Manoah has managed to keep his large frame in sync and has repeated his delivery in order to fill up the strike zone more effectively. Given that he doesn't have that many starts on his resume, he's a rare college pitcher with projection, something that should get him off the board in the first round, much earlier than his older brother Erik, currently a reliever in the Angels system, who was drafted by the Mets in the 13th round of the 2014 Draft.

Don't like this pick, but it's probably not going to be a total bust.

So it looks like they have a number in mind for him already and they will likely used money left over for some HS guy and give them more money

I'm good with that pick. He was probably the best major program pitcher in college baseball this year, has a very good fastball-slider combination, and has demonstrated enough feel for the change-up to think that he should be able to mix it in (he just didn't really need it in college). If all goes according to plan he will move quickly, but that doesn't mean that he's high floor/low-ceiling...if he had a longer track record of pitching the way he did this season, he'd have been the first pitcher off the board.

Keith Law really liked Menoah going into the draft... as if I wasn't conflicted enough already as it is.

Jays fans are going to love Menoah's histrionics, though—that much is for sure.

Pretty much how I feel. I would have went Stott but Manoah was a close 2nd for me.

If the metric is "guys I might regret that we didn't take in five years", Priester and Carroll are probably my two. But still Fangraphs' marks on Manoah gave him the second-best current/future grade on his breaking ball of any pitcher in the draft, and one of the best fastballs, and he's generally regarded to have some of the best refined stuff of any pitcher in 2019. That plays.

I wanted Manoah, Rutledge or one of the left side infield guys (Stott, Baty, Jung). I’m not a Carroll fan, plus doesn’t help that he is asking for close to slot or all of it.

Arizona could have themselves one hell of a draft...they pick at 16, 26, 33, 34, 56, 74, 75 and 93, and their first selection is a tumbling Carroll.
