I wasn't expecting much from this team this season, but man have they disappointed so far. Is anyone actually watching any of these games?

Not even an 80 grade bat can hit for this team.

And what the hell happened to Jansen?

Maybe hiring a guy with no coaching experience above A-ball wasn't the way to go... the returns thus far are just gross.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

The advanced metrics suggest that most of the younger players who actually matter are making good contract. Vlad entered today with a .376 xwOBA; that's very good. Jansen was a shade below-average (which would be fine for a catcher), though he obviously had an awful night tonight. Gurriel's well above-average. Biggio's a shade above-average.

xwOBA isn't perfect, but alongside things like whiff rate, K/BB rates, it's a good measure of player approach. And really, that's the biggest thing you can ask for from a hitting coach: that their charges are hitting the ball hard, and not flailing about most of the time.

I wouldn't be opposed to swapping McGuire and Jansen for a while. If the kid can't manage to sniff .200 with this much playing time, he's not ready.

This team is bad, like really bad. The tank is very strong, and that’s a good thing. Have the Jays ever had the number one pick in the draft? If not what was the highest they’ve ever had? Thanks

Jordan Romano is getting called up for the bullpen. His conversation from starting is especially interesting since the Rangers took him in the Rule 5 draft and tried it, but weren't ready to keep him on the MLB roster long enough to get comfortable with it. He's been very good at Buffalo in that role, so let's see if the Jays actually got lucky with him.

No, had #2 twice early in franchise history. One of those picks was Lloyd Moseby.

This game is a must lose for us. Baltimore is two games ahead of us in the draft. They're not gonna beat anyone else, so we need to make sure they beat us.

When you're starting someone like Jackson or calling up a player with an ERA of 6 it's pretty hard to get excited for the whole team. W-L percentage we're at .348 right now, our 3rd worst season ever. Our worst 2 seasons ever were in the late 70's for **** sakes.

I like baseball too much to not have the game on in the background until the top of the order comes up and stuff like that but this is how bad we are right now.

Romano's ERA is brutal, but it mostly owes to a very high HR rate over a small sample, when he has previously been pretty good at suppressing homers. Could indicate that higher-level competition can tag him, could just be a bit of an anomaly.

If Giles is injured, our all-star rep this year may have to be Eric Sogard. Can you imagine.

Giles going on the DL mid-June with elbow problems is about the worst-case for his trade value.

I don't know if you were being sardonic, but that's exactly what I was thinking as I looked over the sports section today...

OK, thank you. Let’s cross our fingers for an Orioles sweep.

If you ever want to get a sense of how much the draft-and-development industry has improved (and it's still highly variable just by its nature), look at one of those 70s/early-to-mid-80s drafts. More 1st rounders in the 1980 draft -- where we selected a kid who failed to make it out of AA 2nd overall -- went on to be major league managers/GMs than became average or better major leaguers.
