2020 MLB draft thread (June 10-11) - Jays draft Austin Martin at 5(!)
Is this at least 10 months too early? Yes. But when you're as bad as we are, we might as well get the hype train out of station.

Fangraphs' 2020 THE BOARD!: https://www.fangraphs.com/prospects/the-board/2020-mlb-draft?type=0&team=&sort=-1,1
A random ESPN Here Are Some Guys article!: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/26923672/the-2020-mlb-draft-class-stacked-here-names-know
Pitcher Emerson Hancock, who I believe is a white-collar law firm, and Spencer Torkelson, a power-heavy 1B, are the early favourites to be top picks. There are a bunch of interesting arms to follow:
- Mick Abel: tall, thin right-hander in HS who already throws quite hard as a junior, but has plenty of projection.
- Cole Wilcox: will be a draft-eligible sophomore, pretty big stuff, was a reliever owing to Georgia's staff but should be a starter in the spring.
- Asa Lacy: fantastic left-handed stuff, strikeout monster at Texas A&M, some relief risk and a bit walk-prone.
- JT Ginn: big numbers as a freshman, including a 5:1+ K:BB, will be draft-eligible sophomore.
- Jared Jones: smaller, but hyperathletic right-hander with elite stuff.

Sign me up for Hancock or Ginn
#1 Hancock
#2 Pearson
#3 Manoah
#4 Borucki
#5 Thornton
#6 Gaviglio, Pannone
Potential backend guys: Zeuch, Merryweather, Paulino, Perez, Waguespack, SRF, Sopko, Murphy, Diaz
High Upside: Pardinho, Kloffenstein and Williams
High risk, high reward: Elvis
Plus Multiple arms i assume will come when Stroman, Giles, Sanchez and Smoak are moved. Arms in the system dont look so bad.

Re: 2020 MLB draft thread
Has anybodies opinions changed on all they wanted so far? I think Hancock is still the clear #1 right now that 98+ mph fastball is something you can't teach.
I think if Toronto is in the 2-5 range the options should be Torkelson kid has big time power and can be a quality 1B. Imagine Vladdy, Bo Bichette and Hancock in your top 4.
I think if they are looking at a 3B and planning to play Vladdy as a DH Austin Martin is a great option, he is a solid defensive player and is getting more power.
Those would be my top 3, if they fall to 4-5 then Mitchell or Chow-Armstrong are the two best outfield prospects. Both will be solid hitters for average and have above average to plus speed.
That's my top five just curious who would you omit and put in and why

Jays may slot closer to 5 through 10 for draft. How many tiers are there for this draft class? Who sits on which tiers?

Re: 2020 MLB draft thread
Too early to say. There's a lot of well-regarded pitching, but as a couple of them are draft-eligible sophomores who were used in relief as freshmen (which isn't uncommon in top college programs) it'll take the spring season to really prove out their stature.
**** your asterisk.

Re: 2020 MLB draft thread
Obviously you cannot look to much at position and fit when players are all big question marks but aside from going with a pitcher Torkelson could be really interesting if vlad stays at 3b.... potential of an infield that is also the top of he order
Biggio (I think he will be a constant ob guy and give bo someone to bring in unlike the bottom of the order)
Bichette
Vlad
Torkelson with enough power to potential force pitchers to go at vlad little more

That infield defense would be horrendous lol. No way Vlad sticks at 3B.

I feel like we need more outfielders. Shatkins will be on the case!

Based on last year's record, I think.
Either way, we have already clinched the 5th spot: http://www.tankathon.com/mlb
Black Watch and Hamyltowne, my former usernames, are tartan patterns. Nothing to do with any race or any city.

We get the fifth pick. The tiebreaker is record in the previous season, and we were worse than Seattle in 2018.

Seems like several high-end centerfield and pitching prospects. Perfect.

The recent history of players drafted #5 is bad.

Re: 2020 MLB draft thread
Kind of amazingly, no ties amongst the bottom 15 teams. Every record is different. The Chicago White Sox and the LA Angels will both have 72 wins, but not the same record, considering The Sox have one less loss as they ended up playing one less game.

AP sources: MLB could skip draft; service time big issue
Wait... WHAT??
NEW YORK — Major League Baseball is considering skipping its amateur draft this year and putting off the next international signing period as a way to preserve cash while games are affected by the new coronavirus, people familiar with the discussions told The Associated Press.
Wait... WHAT??

Owners considering being cheap and trying to manipulate service time?

Re: 2020 MLB draft thread
5
team logo Blue Jays
Pick: LHP Asa Lacy, Texas A&M ($6,180,700 slot value)
Coming into the spring, five players had a chance to play their way into the No. 1 pick. Four came off the board with the first four picks in this mock draft and Lacy is the fifth. Also, the Blue Jays have used seven of their last eight first-round picks on college players, so Lacy is an obvious fit. He has mid-90s gas and two good breaking balls, and he allowed just two runs with 46 strikeouts in 24 innings prior to the shutdown. Toronto would likely go with Hancock or especially Torkelson over Lacy if they're still on the board here.
