Schad wrote:Let's use a real-by-god example here, and one that makes sense given that the Rays really pioneered the opener thing. Ryne Stanek started 50% of his appearances last year. Did well. His mix is a maxed-out FB/SL/SF combo, which is lethal in smaller doses, but if he has to back off the fastball for a longer stint, the FB/SF differential shrinks, and the movement on the slider diminishes. He's much better in shorter appearances, but not a world-beater at the back of a 'pen; he's a 7th/occasional 8th guy. Using an opener has made him a really valuable asset that gets through the toughest hitters an opponent has with enough regularity that he's probably going to 'start' more games than anyone has for several decades, with good numbers. That's a good use of his talents.

But I almost feel like it’s a self fulfilling prophecy. It’s like openers can’t through a changeup when they’re openers but they’re openers because they can’t throw changeups and they can only throw for two innings, three max because they’re openers but because they’re openers they can’t throw for more than two or three innings.

Openers are relievers.

Relievers are guys with limited repertoires that can only manage a turn through the rotation, at most.

Openers are relievers good enough to be better in a single turn through the top portion of the order than a starter might be.

Based on that criteria there are a lot of potential openers.

Now need to go 18-32 (36% winning percentage) or better the rest of the way to avoid 100 losses. Even with this shambles pitching staff, I think we should manage that.

Man, he is so fat for being so young. He's really gotta completely overhaul his diet.

Yennsy Diaz? Unexpected. He's been good most of the year in AA, especially at home.

Seems a bit early, but at almost 23 and the big league team not playing for a playoff spot not a bad idea to give him a look.

Batspeed makes everything easier. Facing 89 doesn't hurt.

Bo Bichette has started off as Big League career on a six game hitting streak. Anybody know the record for a rookie starting their career?

Most recently Juan Pierre for the Rockies with a 16 game streak in 2000, record is Chuck Aleno in 1941 with a 17 game streak and then the overall record by a rookie in a season is 34 games by Benito Santiago, another former Blue Jay.

If vlad's legs were not tree trunks, he could have been hurt badly on that one.

Wait, I am confused because several posters here specifically said that he was going to definitely be in the bullpen for Houston. Why is he starting?

Hate to jump to conclusions, but Sanchez no-no through 5 and Fisher allows a routine pop-up to hit him in the face and exits the game. Ugghh
