Nothing yet on the outgoing, but someone either has to go in the trade or be dropped from the 40 man roster overnight to make room for Villar.

Villar's wildly inconsistent, and a rental. Not against the pickup, so long as it's fairly cheap.

Like all the rentals depends on the price. But he's a solid stop gap option for SS/3B this year.

Griffin Conine is the return. While I despair at the loss of a large adult son, and his numbers were great last year, I'm really not sure how you translate a 36% K rate in A ball as a 22 year old into major league success.

Not crazy about giving up Grif. He's not really the type of player I like. Though he will likely hit 30+HR's per season one day, he will also likely have a higher SO total than average. Still a high price to pay for a utility rental. I guess Bo will be out for a while yet and is much better than what we have at SS now, and better than most of our bench.

Have to give the front office some credit for trying to compete. Can't even call them Shatikins any more.

Watch Montoyo still find a way to start Panik in these games.

Jeff Conine'scareer as a Marlin may have been the reason they made this move.

While I feel Conine is not an excessive price to pay, I just find it weird that an organization with hardly any outfield prospects of note just gave up two of the few it had for rentals. Yes, you can convert infielders and such, and maybe Auston Martin ends up in CF,

I was never particularly high on Conine, because there really aren't many players who posted those sorts of K rates who managed to make enough contact at the big league level to stick. There's Joey Gallo, and...there's Joey Gallo. He's the only player I can find in at least a decade that posted a 35%+ K rate in a minor league season and went on to do much, beyond the one year Domingo Santana was fairly good. Otherwise you have some Lewis Brinsons and Travis Demerittes and Monte Harrisons who might amount to something (and also have more positional value than Conine) but haven't to date, and a bunch of dudes that washed out before they made the majors.

I'd place a bet on Will Robertson (from the Taijuan Walker deal) being a good major leaguer long before I would Conine.

Robertson is still not official..... maybe 5% chance it's not Roberston after all?? Considering it would mean having traded their 2 best corner outfield prospects with power -- already a thin pool for us and also a position of need...

Well, I guess I feel a little better about it now that Teo and Randy are MVP candidates
Our OF is still relatively young and we have other guys that can play in the corners. It's not like these guys were high calibre defenders.

Neither was particularly highly rated in our system: Fangraphs had Conine 19th and Robertson 31st. Few hug prospects as tightly as I do, but we really haven't given up much, focusing on higher-variance acquisitions on rental deals that shore us up a bit without hindering our ability to be more aggressive in the offseason.

I'm hoping Walker isn't a rental. We can sign him now, no?

Totally agree. It's funny that Toronto was described as the (or one of the) Big Players at this year's deadline, and all we gave up was Robertson, Bergen, and Conine. Filling our holes for this year's post season, far more important than retaining 2 prospects #15-30, when we can re-fill our dearth of OF prospects even with minor-league deals (which I feel are an underutilized tool for building talent, but that's a whole 'nother conversation..)
