Robbie Alomar Removed From Level of Excellence, Placed on MLB Ineligible List Over Sexual Misconduct

This is unfortunately pretty thread-worthy. Alomar did something, and MLB hired an outside firm to investigate. The result of that investigation was such that he's now banned by the league from being employed by a team or participating in any official capacity, and the Jays have now severed all ties with him.

Forgot how much he looked like Puerto Rican Kim-Jong Un in that HOF photo...

Judging by Mansfield’s actions with regards to moving the all-star game wouldn’t surprise me if this was a massive overreaction just a hunch.

Can’t wait to see the details eventually.

According to TSN this is due to workplace sexual harassment. I can understand why the Blue Jays would completely cut ties with him as the alleged incident seems to involve the franchise. Hopefully some details can be made available without compromising the woman's lawsuit as fans would want some closure as to why the team is cutting ties with Alomar.

There have been allegations surrounding Alomar for years and years regarding this kind of thing (https://www.espn.com/espn/otl/news/story?id=5765281). It's too bad it had to come to this, but pretty sure he's just a garbage person.

Jays can’t have nice things Alomar gets banned and Halladay doesn’t go into HOF wearing a Toronto cap because the family felt disrespected by this management group.

Unfortunately, yeah. It's possible this is a really bad incident; it's possible that they unearthed other incidents that haven't been made public.

It's also possible that they took into account Robbie's history of being just not a really good guy, particularly to women, and decided that he's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

With both the league and Jays moving swiftly to make these moves, the evidence must be pretty damning. Nobody is leaving room for any possibility that it’s wrong.

I'm going to begin all my not-really-apologies with that from now on. "With the current social climate, I understand that I shouldn't have drank a bottle of Jack and tried to fight the pastor during Easter service".

The typical response of a innocent person is ‘I didn’t do it’. Anyone who blames a 3rd party right off the hop? Yikes. Surprised he didn’t call it a Democratic witch hunt.

I would be really surprised if MLB did all this for workplace harassment. That would've gotten a reprimand, maybe a short suspension. But a response this drastic probably indicates that they uncovered something more serious.

Curious as to when this investigation started.... Only because of the Angels pitching coach, who still being investigated, nothing has happened yet?

I think assumptions like that are foolish and give a lot of people a lot more credit than they deserve. People have been fired and pushed out over very little in the past. Just look at how many people get the 3rd degree just for allegations without any investigation. Chris D'elia comes to mind.

In general I think it's antithetical to human nature to take away the positive achievements and recognition someone earned for something they did outside of their playing career. If you reduce everyone to the worst thing they've ever done it does nothing but bring all of humanity down. I think its best to recognize that humans are complex, contradictory creatures who do both good and bad things in their lives and examining them in a black and white way doesn't add any value to our society, it only makes us more negative and cynical.

Roberto Alomar was a Hall of Fame baseball player and he earned his place on on the Level of Excellence by being one of the greatest Blue Jays players ever. That's all. It's got nothing to do with him as a person to keep those awards. If they don't want to continue employing him as a consultant or ambassador, sure, that's fair. But does this mean we can't refer to his achievements on live broadcasts or see highlights of his greatest plays? Is the home run off of Eckersley verboten now? It's ridiculous.

Oh please. Yes there are individual cases that should be avoided but there are far more that go the other way where abusers are de facto supported in their efforts because nobody does anything that matters about it.

And abuse covers all manners of things. In Alomar's case he's had a string of allegations about unprotected sex while HIV positive only to be met with a denial on his part. If allegations were enough, he'd be done by now. His current ex claims to have proof of his HIV treatments and maybe even diagnosis. We don't know what this is and MLB is better off not giving specifics but you're reaching here.

Considering that MLB hired a separate third party investigation team and acted on the results, it seems pretty serious and far beyond simple accusations. Keep in mind Alomar wasn't simply fired, he was essentially blacklisted from MLB and the Blue Jays. This is basically the stiffest punishment you can give a guy in Alomar's position.

I agree that assumptions are definitely fooling foolish at this point though.

I'm not reaching for anything. Even if he did everything he is accused of I don't think they should take his number down. It has nothing to do with what he did on the field.

You were assuming that it was more than just workplace harassment and I am saying it could absolutely have been just that.

I'm curious how far you'd go with this. If Dave Stieb shoots up a Piggly Wiggly, do you leave him on the Level?
